There are few consensus opinions left in American politics. The ones that remain, now that Dolly Parton has passed away, fall neatly into two camps.
The first are policies that the United States has carried out unthinkingly for so long that both major parties’ positions have calcified into default support. Think U.S. aid to Israel or farm subsidies. Whether you’re a young politician looking to avoid alienating your peers, or a senior representative not looking to upset the apple cart, there’s little incentive to squabble over the way things have always been done.
The remaining unifier is unspeakable tragedies. Mass shootings, natural disasters and terrorist attacks send Republicans and Democrats scrambling for a camera into which they can express their sympathies. This is also somewhat understandable. Once emergency funding has been freed up, what else is there to do but send thoughts and prayers?
In this regard, Abdul El-Sayed will fit right in if he ever makes it to Washington. He proved it when Bari Weiss’ CBS News ambushed him earlier this week to toss the Democratic Senate candidate from Michigan an all-time softball: How do you feel about the Sept. 11 attacks? (Sorry if this kills the suspense, but he thought they were bad.)
"There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about the destruction that 9/11 wrought,” said Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, when asked Monday about resurfaced posts on Sept. 11 attacks.
“What happened on 9/11 is a disaster. It was a terrible attack on our country,” He said. “Our responsibility is also to think about, how do we build an America where we are protecting our servicemen and woman from being asked to fight in wars we have no business fighting?”

Every time I've seen clips of El-Sayed, he's verbally demolishing some right wing chud looking for a soundbite they can try to demonize him with. We need more people in the left like him and Mamdani - unafraid to say whats wrong, stand by their principles and actually work to fix the problems.
I could give less of a shit what religion or culture someone is from. Mamdani and El-Sayed have shown more actual patriotic love for America than anyone on the right has in years.

That's what terrorism does. People who resort to terrorism usually do it because they have no other realistic option to strike back and it's never about the raw damage they do but the psychological and social damage afterwards.
9/11 has turned the Americans batshit insane and they went on an uncontrolled rampage changing their society and solidifying the hate of Muslims when the american army bombed weddings and killed children ( by mistake but it still happened).

on October 7th 2023 - a horrible terrorist attack but they knew the Israeli response would be beyond horrible as they took massive revenge and here we are 3 years later and the world now at least dislikes Israel if not outright hates the country for what they did to Gaza as a response.

So, the problem there is reprisals against innocent bystanders (e.g. the food service people, the FDNY, office workers) is a violation of the Geneva Conventions. There can be no justification for an attack on civilians and no matter who does the attack, they are terrorists... even when the US bombs a girl's school or shoots down a civilian airliner (Iran Air 655) or supplies weapons to do a genocide, those actions are immoral and any retaliation on our civilians is also immoral.

You cannot 'even the numbers' by committing another war crime... it just becomes war crimes all the way down.
I will note that Al Qaeda (or ISIS, or Red Army Faction) are not generally signatories to the various Geneva Conventions and Hague Statutes, which actually makes their position more tenuous, since they are unlawful combatants and are not offered the protections of such conventions either.

The low estimates are that the US has killed between 6 and 10M civilians from 1945-2001.... a quick breakdown: Korea: 1.5-3M; Indochina: 2-4M; Desert Storm: 4000 direct civilian deaths... and under the heading, 'Various US-backed Cold War Conflicts: 2M (this includes Guatemala, El Salvador, Indonesia, etc.
This does NOT include the post-2001 mass targeting of civilians under the GWOT.

Attacking the Pentagon might have been legal under the Geneva Conventions, IFF they had not used a civilian airliner to do it.
I will note, Al Qaeda does not discriminate, in any way, between military and civilian and sees innocent bystanders as just as legitimate as a soldier with a rifle... so, to give them the credibility of sending the military after them was a mistake... we should have invaded Afghanistan and had Al Qaeda arrested by the FBI with military support.
