I'm not an expert, but this is better than some art that I have read about.

I hated this guy in spelunky
mankautu
Despite what the Elon fanboys say, he didn't give Musk any money. He found a USED car.
Targe0
I mean it's not hard to get hold of a totalled Tesla, there's a lot of them out there as they break really easily.
azgrak
It’s the batteries. If you get one bad cell the entire pack reads as bad or “bricked”. Dealer auctions are seeing these go for as little as 3k. Although Tesla suspensions are notoriously weak, you’d have thought they would have built it more robust since they built such a heavy car.
Targe0
But they also built them very cheaply. They cut costs everywhere they could. Teslas a not quality products.

I mean, that Tesla was paid, already, so what's the provocation?
idonthaveauser
Elon shot a tesla into space. I don't think he's gonna be 'provoked' by an art peace using a car bought from him.
Kirj4v4
Are we talking about the same guy?
Nuttsy
Mayhaps. After all, we do know he's an incredibly thick-skinned individual, with an incredible capacity for taking a joke.
UserMCP
Never owned a car? Whose car is it, then?
idonthaveauser
"to provoke Elon Musk". I guess there's your answer.
kerms
I think you might be getting into semantics here
kerms
He never owned a car, prior to the car he bought specifically to immediately destroy for an art piece.
Beezebubbles
I have no idea. It could be a rental. Those vehicles are often treated harshly and smart consumers avoid purchasing when the history is known.

Well I'll take this over a banana ducked taped to a wall any day
TheFluteFromBandCamp
But I know how big that wall was. I have no idea the size of a Tesla or giant stone head
TheMostKink
A Tesla is about the size of a car.
Targe0
And the stone head is slightly bigger than a car.
Selfawerewolf
Art being subjective you just go ahead and speak strictly for yourself. You're free to duck all the tape you want.
Malloon
The fact you're talking about it even today with the exact message the artist was pushing is a testament to the brilliance of the particular piece of art.
Targe0
Yeah, it got people to agree with their statement without them even realising it. The artist literally incepted their message into people's brains using nothing but a banana and tap. It's an impressive achievement if nothing else.
SergeantMajorSpoiler
Ducked...taped?
SlotCarsarejustsmallteslas
Duct tape is what I assume they mean?
YouMayFindThisMildlyInteresting
"Duct tape" is probably a corruption of "duck tape"
SlotCarsarejustsmallteslas
Intriguing. Thanks’
moinonplus
Huh, TIL that 'duck tape' is the actual term, and that there's a cloth called 'duck' which is the origin of the name
TheMostKink
The fact that wall banana is brought up every time art is discussed is a testament to wall banana's impact as an artwork.
Targe0
Especially because it was a criticism of modern art. So everyone who brings it up to complain about it is ironically agreeing with the artist's point for the art work.
cousteau
It was meant to be fake art, but it turns out you cannot make fake art, for fake art is art too.
Cayowin
I can understand the message of the banana more than i can of this work. As it was a comment about the state of modern art. But that is what art is, some stuff speaks to different people. This installation i have no idea what he is trying to say.
Targe0
I can see one view being “Tradition over modernity” symbolised by the ancient sculpture from a long-lost and little known civilisation, crushing a Tesla a symbol of modern cheaply built but overpriced tech that won't last. And in that way it could also be making a statement about disposable consumption of the modern world.
MagnorCriol
"Fuck you, Elon Musk, you're a douche"
Drakon2k2
I think pretty literal. “Screw you Musk I put a big rock on your car cause I know it will make you angry”.
Thorketil
I would have expected the interpretation to be a little more profound. So, for example, "ancient, indigenous culture weighs more than an industrially manufactured product from the hands of a pompous capitalist with delusions of grandeur".
paintingagency
That sounds like it'd make Musk angry.
minipancho94
That's the thing about art, it can be both. I've made quite literally pieces and they've found new and additional meanings as I made/finished them. Personally I see it as exploited indigenous peoples triumphing over capitalism and colonialism.
aussysadmin
Could well be a commentary on damage Tesla is doing to indigenous cultural sites with their lithium mines. Though I’m just assuming that based on Rio Tinto’s actions in Australia and my knowledge of the existence of lithium mines in South America.
aljov
do they actually mine in Mexico? Or have any production in Mexico?
Targe0
Olmec had an empire that ranger a lot of central and South America. So it doesn't have to be within Mexico for the artist to be making a statement about environmental actions somewhere else.
paintingagency
Even if they don't, there's such a thing as Indigenous solidarity.
DonkeyGoat
Olmec?
Targe0
Is an old South American empire that came before all the others there. They inspired much of the mythos used by the other later empires. They made a lot of Giant stone head sculptures, and that's about all we know about them. They're one of the biggest Mysteries of South America.
rabbitron
Beezebubbles
I guess. The artist used what he is most familiar with and at 42 he's maybe a bit too young to be familiar with the Zardoz head:
PullShporttel
THE PENIS IS EVIL
Targe0
Olmec Stone heads are South American artefacts from a Mysterious ancient empire that rule South America before any of the later Empires. We know very little about them, but they left behind a lot of Giant Stone head sculptures that look like the one in the art.
UrbanPlatypus
42… spose that answers everything.
