Stop buying this cheap poorly made crap!

Yeah, what's the point of steelbook then?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It would be cool to have a list compiled of any reasonably modern games that can be played without internet connection, even if the install is still via download.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I counter that all sales should include physical disks. I can imagine that some who've lost access to accounts for one reason or another have thought the same thing. Buying something which you can never physically touch is a purchase which you can never fully control your own access to. No one can 'flip a switch' and turn off access to a book on your shelf for instance.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So what does the SteelBook display then? The future sucks.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. At the same time I feel the entire collectors edition having the game at all should go the way of the dino. That way all the Playstation and Xbox will branding doesn't need to be there and the money can be better spent on its contents.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The most expensive bundle of Diablo 4 didn't include a copy of the game of any kind.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

physical discs rarely have the whole game on them and dont work unless you connect and download the rest of the game. It’s just a physical key to digital product, unfortunately.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The most ridiculous part of this is the display case. What's the point of an empty display case? What is this, Blockbuster?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Diablo IV Collector's Box did not even include a copy of the game. You had to pay up to $100 for that separately. And sucks if you bought all that because it turned out to be just about the worst Blizzard game ever and they seem completely disconnected from their customers.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The reason these games don't come with discs is because there are all digital editions of the system that don't have disc players. So as not to preclude people who own those systems from having the collector's edition, they just include a code. If you must have a disc, you can always sell the code to someone and buy the disc seperately

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hadn't thought of that. Good call.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

with an empty steelbook case???

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Main problem is game size, 100gb games would require lots of discs. I actually thought a flash drive would be a good idea for physical game copies. Imagine having a Keychain with all your fave games on it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My least favorite thing about digital only copies is that realistically I’m just renting it. They can take it away any time

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Do compact disks have enough size to fit games that are made nowadays? Aren't games between 50 and 100gb at the moment? I don't think they've invested enough in CD tech to keep up with it.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Typically dual layer Blu rays which I think are around 100 gigs.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is one game I want, I want the physical collector's edition but I want it on steam not PS4/switch and Steam is only digital and has a completely different set up. Both are good but I just want the physical collection, with a steam code

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While I’m with you on owning a disc. We are gonna run into so real shit the moment support for these games disappears anyway. Even with a physical disc. Day 1 updates? How many games have broken shit in them?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They don't want to send out discs because it becomes a permanent record of the hot steaming pile they release on day 1.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nintendo surprised me with BotW, I'm even more surprised all games aren't sold on microSD. It's weird we have the tech and ignore it for energy intensive downloads

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Downloads allow them to push the release date. In the olden days you had to have your shit to the factory months ahead of the release date. These days games get finished a year or three after they are released. Look at no man's sky for an example that helped the suits understand how little they have to deliver as a minimum viable product

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, wait till you hear about NFTs

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, with how bloated the game files are, you still wouldn't have the full game unless they include 5 or 6 disks. You'll put one disk in, it'll have an authenticator for the DRM and maybe a few files, then the rest will be downloaded anyway. Then you're still subject to the whims of the platform. If their store goes down or they stop listing the game, you can't redownload it anyway. I say this not to defend the manufacturers, but to show how the system is rigged against players either way.

3 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

I actually prefer a drm-free digital copy. Easy to back up and lasts longer than physical media. GoG is great for that.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Many many games back in the day came on multiple discs. FF7 on PS1, pretty much all the RTS games on PC, etc

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

#1 every game now days has a massive, game changing patch in the first month, the disc's may as well be soundtrack or something that is actually complete on release.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, how can you be collecting it, if you don't actually end up having it?

3 years ago | Likes 291 Dislikes 0

Diablo 4 is the first CE I have not bought from Blizzard, 100 of plastic and it doesn't come with the game?! I'm sure I can find the art book somewhere else.

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

It's an online-only game, though. Having a disc wouldn't be physically having the game any more than having the voucher is.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

D4 collectors came without even the digital game If I remember right

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

i checked, and it says in bold red letters "no game included"

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My god, every time someone mentions a new scummy financial ploy by Blizzard for D4, I think "There couldn't possibly be more right?" and time and time again I'm proven wrong.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

At least you get a game. Mirrors edge catalyst collectors edition didn't come with the game

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's an NFT

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even if they gave you a disc, it would just start the download of the actual game when you install it.

3 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 0

Yes very annoyed to find that was the case. I bought a fucking disc to avoid having to make decisions about storage. Feels like a scam.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Supposedly, it's due to hardware restrictions. Basically, games have gotten so big that they can't be effectively read from the disk, therefore to operate optimally, it has to rip the file from the disk, store it locally, and then run from that. Could be total bs, but it's what I read when I got my PS4 and started this whole shit show.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It could at least be installed from the disc

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

…oh right I forgot games are more than 5 gigs now. I still hate it!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The PS5 comes with an Ultra HD BluRay Drive, which at best can read 144 Mb/s, so 18 MB/s. That is slower than old spinning disk HDDs. An order of magnitude slower than the builtin SSD. Normal BluRays achieve, with the fasted BR-drive, 72 MB/s. So it does impact loading times, or streaming in assets and textures when running through a world. So at the very least AAA titles would have to "install" onto the console SSD which we already saw in the PS3 era, I believe. And then there's day 1 patches.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep modern SSDs are so much faster. Got a gen 4 in my PC and it's a world of difference from my last PC with a 7400rpm disc.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which is also offensive !

3 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

which is also the norm unfortunately. we but access is to games and not the games themselves. Still true for “physical” copies

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I miss the old days when you could buy a game and go play it on the hardware you own without having to pay a single cent on anything else including internet... Even consoles are that way now.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You know what works? My old games on steam. You know what does not work? Every single game I have physical media for.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Before the steam says... Used to physical games included the entire game without even having to go online, MechWarrior 2, warcraft 1 and 2, rise of the triad, doom etc. We had days before capitalism destroyed the golden era of gaming

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My warcraft disc do not work. Never had mw2

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think Ive given up on gaming. It's become less about making proper products that you can own and more about squeezing more money out of you on a monthly microtransactional way.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Something tells me you don't like pay to win games.... am I wrong?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Time to go back to the classics that you missed.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You might like the indie scene. Most of them don't have the infrastructure to support the microtransaction/"live service" system even if they WANTED to (which few do). And, if you hear about an indie game it's probably because it's actually got something good going for it, instead of AAA marketing budget. Doubly so if they've grown big enough to warrant a physical release.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This. Tons of good indy games on sites like g">.com">gog.com and itch.io, DRM free so you actually own them.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I feel this. Don't give it up all together, there are still some great companies doing the right thing, releasing proper finished games, not adding "micro"-transactions, not adding bogus$20 DLC every 3mo with 1h of content. Deep Rock Galactic, Stardew Valley and Slay the Spire spring to mind (I'm not affiliated with any of these titles, just a mid 30s gamer sick of $100 games that are just out to make money)

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

As much as starfield looks amazing, I think RDR3 would be the only one I spring for next, and thats gonna require a new console anyways since I stopped buying after the PS4. I'd play a switch for the zelda games, bur again would need to buy the console. Its just exhausting to think about

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Baldur's Gate 3 is fun too if you want a big game.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And on the shelf, a SteelBook display case holding original factory air

3 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 0

That's what happened for me with Horizon: Forbidden West. Given to me as a Christmas present... got a pretty statue, AND AN EMPTY FUCKING CASE. Why waste the fucking money and environmental impact on a case of I'm not getting a disc... Fucking mind blowing

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a couple of games with their SteelBook cases. They're nice. Not $200 nice.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This steelbook case doesn't even come with a disc, it's literally an expensive paper voucher holder and a slap in the face to gamers and collectors.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, like I said. Not $200 nice

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gotta hold that digital voucher safe for down in the future when they do away with physical copies entirely!

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Netflix is ending DVDs by mail, we are in the darkest timeline.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They closed down my local video store, can't even rent movies anymore unless the redbox has em and they are so behind in getting new stuff in its pathetic.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No physical copy means you don't actually own it

3 years ago | Likes 229 Dislikes 3

Honestly you never really did. "Buying" a game or movie means you essentially purchased a license to watch or play it for the life of the media it was sold to you on. Exact wording for a game is "a non-exclusive, non-transferable limited right and license to use one copy of the program solely for your personal use". In fact, a lot of them actually prohibit lets-plays with "you may not exploit the program or any of its parts commercially". Ever actually read the legalese at the end of the manual?

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Actually you never did own it with a physical copy. Even back in the VHS days. Buying the tape gave you permission to play it only order certain conditions. You have never owned the content. It's all in the EULAs that no one reads

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You still don't own most modern games even if you do still own the disk. Does it have a server, or DRM in any way, is PS+/XBL required?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then you still don't own it, you're still licensing it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"That's the point." - game company

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The disk will just be empty with an installer... games are not just an exe file that's good to go. They are developing and patching right until the launch day and usually a good while after. So your physical disks will be usekess on there own.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even when you have a physical copy you still don't. This worked out well for a friend who got $20 replacement media for a $60 xbox game.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

signing the EULA means u dont own it. the distribution form of software usually never makes u the owner. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_license. they give u a license to use the software; they still own it. read the fineprint on your physical copies.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Moot if you need online activation/verification. So long as there is DRM arguing about the medium is splitting hairs. Case in point, I own any game I bought on GOG more than I own most modern console games even if I get a piece of plastic in a box.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any physical copy of a AAA game only holds a chunk of the game anyways. If you're worried about that "you don't own it if it's on digital", hop in your time machine to 2008 because that ship as fuckin sailed bud.

3 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 1

i bet u got this several times by now .. but here! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_license ;) u never owned any of those games! u where granted usage rights. rejoice! nothing changed!

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

But... Dude... Are you saying NFTs are a scam?

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Do you really own a game anymore? With all of the patches and software as a service and minimum viable product and shit it feels like the corporations ruined games.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

you didnt even before that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_license.
