Def not as much. The average tariff rate for imported goods was around 2%. But the people paying that increase in price are the same - the American consumer - no matter what the White House says. So unless you personally profit from the tariffs- that money is coming from *YOU* (if you live in the US - if not, then you’re paying whatever the tariff is for your country).

I will buy 50% off meat every chance I get. The only reason meat stays red in the meat case is because as much as 70 percent of meat sold in stores in the United States is treated with carbon monoxide to keep the meat a deceptively fresh-looking red color. Let the room air (oxygen) get in and it will turn grey. Bright red meat can have bacterial contamination too.

When tariffs were high and there were no income taxes (pre WWI), government was almost nonexistent- about 2% of U.S. GDP. It's almost 20x as big now. The **deficit** is more than 6% of U.S. GDP (almost 40% of revenue) and it's not going down.

French wine and champaign get a 20% Tarrif and maybe 30% soon, not the normal poor Target group. The sadest part of it: The US won't have a big chance to avoid European/South American Wine. Because most workers on Californian Wineyards have fled. So less Us produced Wine AND Tarrifs on it.

Ordered keyboard and key switches. 20% + 25% blanket tariffs on the switches, just for being from China (latter) and China + Hong Kong (former). Keyboard only got hit with the 20% tariff.
Don't mind paying taxes on my imports, but I still think blanket tariffs are stupid, especially when they have or can change every two weeks. 😕

I mean "they're the one whose name is on the bill" much in the same way as the manufacturer pays for raw materials and passes along that cost in the price of the finished good, or the transport company pays the trucker and passes along that cost in the price of the logistics service. It's not useful to say Bob down the street is paying miners in the iron mine when he's buying nails even if ultimately, when you follow the money far enough, they are.

It is not part of the presented logic that things would get cheaper.
The presented logic is saying that tariffs apply additional expense over and above other expense increases.

In theory you have a point... but harvests are starting / about to start in the US. And guess what we are sorely lacking. That's right, harvesters. A lot of prices on many, many things are about to go way, way up due to scarcity. So now we have both tariffs and scarcity issues to deal with. Yay? Thankfully, I'm not really affected as a large portion of my diet is rice, beans, chicken, etc. Although Banana prices are up about 25%.

Tariffs can work, if you plan it YEARS ahead, announce it. Work with local producers to increase production, and then you start with a low tariff and gradually increase it over the years as local production ramps up.
But that is for targeted products that can be produced inside the country, and that can be easily scaled up.
