When I was a kid we had all sorts of bullshit about Nuclear Deterrence. It wasn't enough to be able to blow the whole planet up 3 times over, we had to be able to do it 4 times.
The idea was that by having stupid quantities of disgustingly destructive weaponry, the "Other Side" would think at least twice before being naughty.
Every day laws it is sometimes argued are supposed to be a deterrent to things like knocking off someone's car, stabbing them, stealing frying pans or smoking a joint.
For a lot of people their own morality combined with the law do act as a deterrent to them fucking up.
Then there are those who ignore the law, those whose moral compasses point in rather than North. Sometimes they are genuinely sub intelligent and simply act.
They still get punished because (in theory at least) the determining fact of the law is whether they know Right from Wrong within the context of the law as it applies in the particular circumstance. Not whether law is right or wrong or whether larger things are at play which drove that person to break the law.
Pieces of shit tore up your Constitution, not just broke law but the document upon which your Law is founded/predicated.
There are No extenuating circumstances. There is no injustice against which they are railing/revolting.
There is No reason to forgive and forget, No reason to be tolerant.
The Constitution and subsequently the Law are constructs, ideas. Even if they are carved in stone, they are not themselves stone. They are simply ideas which we as societies agree upon in order that we might be fruitful and prosperous with The Greatest Good For The Greatest Number.
Like all ideas, some are going to disagree, some are going to be hurt and others live a charmed life. That Is Life.
Trying to overturn a set of ideas upon which generations have agreed in order to live well is egregious. It is in the terms of the Constitution, treasonous.
Do not give in to the notion that Forgiveness will be less disruptive and harmful. It will not.
Punishment is part of breaking the law. Apply the full penalties to Everyone who tried to wreck one of the most successful societies if the 20th Century.

TLDR: Don't forgive, punish.
