This is wonderful news for 2 reasons. I love seeing indigenous people jumping in to politics, and Considering how much of my country has been swinging blue (blue is bad in Canada), because of misinfo about government causing inflation (instead of corporate greed and gouging) and misinfo about freedom and trans people, it is wonderful to see this. NDP is left wing. We need to continue to kick the right wing asshats out.

Is Manitoba NDP similar to federal NDP?

Jagmeet Singh walks into parliament.. and says ‘when I’m PM’….. everybody starts laughing… try story bro! What an asshat!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would be a much easier read if they just said 1st indigenous premier rather then 1st 1st nation's premier.

Congrats Manitoba! I wish we had an NDP Premier. Instead we have a corrupt druglord.

I mean I'd be worried and depressed if I had a trans kid in my class... and I thought their parents might beat their ass because the school made a call home.

I can really hope that the NDP start winning in other provinces too

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Manitoba had been solid orange for years. Unfortunately when a party is in power for too long they start lying constantly and get complacent. Which is why they were ousted in the first place. But I literally don't want any party to win in manitoba because they all suck tbh.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, seeing so many Canadians not immediately asking if the provincial NDP over there even remotely resemble the federal and jumping straight to "yay, they won" is kinda painful.

For example, the BC NDP are functionally the liberals, while the BC liberal party is functionally the federal Conservatives.

Also, God I hate Canadian politics. Why do they all suck so much

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We really need to rid Canada of Cons.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It’ll only work if they can hold power long enough to do some good. Typically they only last 4 years because they have to make difficult decisions about priorities when it comes to cleaning up the mess left to them by the conservatives. Then people get upset about taxes and elect a conservative government because they promise the moon and then infrastructure is neglected for the sake of tax cuts, and eventually the people get annoyed at their shit falling apart and elect the ndp or liberals

I'm sure this pisses off the religious right in southern Manitoba but he won a good election. His competition campaigned like a bunch of angry teenagers. I heard him speak a couple of times 10 years ago. A smart man who has seen some shit.

Nice to hear

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck yeah. I live in the middle of a heavily conservative riding, so my vote is always a drop of orange in an ocean of blue. NDP needs to start gaining more traction if we're ever gonna get rid of the robber barons on the right.

HA red AND blue are bad in Canada. There isnt anything the liberals haven't done that conservatives havent done too

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

The conservatives tried to retroactively take my pension away. The Libs have not. The Cons want to make CPP optional. That is to lower the level of contribution to the point where it will fail, not to mention who will support all the uninsured elderly?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Historically the Conservative government has raised the debt far more than Libs?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The last government that managed a surplus was the conservatives. The Liberals and Conservatives go back and forth on how shit they are usually based on how long they've been in power. The cons are trying to break out of that trend by being terrible before getting elected this time around though.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Name one good thing the conservatives have done for Canada in the last 40 years. And don't say lower the gst, because they bankrupted the country under Mulroney, so if they hadn't, we wouldn't even have the gst.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

@kowcatchan I'm still waiting for one thing...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The harper government opened with a budget surplus, TFSAs are kinda neat, guaranteed benefits for veterans, free trade agreement with the EU, ended with a minimal deficit. And, because the US has set the bar real low now, didn't go out of their way to repeal social crap.

Obviously they've done a ton of crap I don't like as well, and they're taking a concerning amount of inspiration from the US republicans, but they haven't usually been much worse than the liberals, however low a bar that may be

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Frankly, most of our politicians just suck, and everything around them is depressingly garbage.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Opened with a surplus from the liberals. Supplemented by breaking 4 laws and stealing the EI fund to balance the budget later on, TFSA are neat I'll give you that one (but also, it was brought in as a loophole to allow the affluent another way to hide their money from taxes), they CUT veterans benefits, and gutted the military, CETA is almost as bad for Canada as NAFTA .

As a Manitoban it was scary just how close it was considering just how bad the conservative party has been these last 8 years. I'm glad that the NDP won, but we have a LOT of work to do to ensure that the cons stay out.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I visit my buddy in rural southern Manitoba fairly regularly, and was amazed at the percentage of his neighbours (100%) who are crypto-fascist, extreme right Catholics who think the pope is Satan. Since covid, he has no one sane left to talk to. I can't believe they elected the NDP; those guys must be losing their shit

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I assume that was supposed to say Christo-fascist. But yeah I hear you yeah.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, I actually meant crypto; they would never call themselves fascists, but they sure do admire all the traits of fascists. They thump the bible all right, but most of what they rail against has to do with brown people/gays/liberals/ anyone opposing huge grain subsidies. They all also have in-ground pools that written up as farm machinery

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fair enough. I think most of the rest of the world refers to those folks as Christo-fascists.

My favourite way to respond to the “Justinflation” thing is to say “Wow! Trudeau is more powerful than I thought - he caused a global inflation crisis?!”

2 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

My favourite response is "wow, I didn't realise you don't understand basic economics"

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

His government is causing inflation in Canada, since, you know, that's how economics works. It's just that it's being caused by the constant refusal to break up fucking monopolies and letting those monopolies, as well as private equity firms, buy up everything.

That and new construction is kinda a nightmare for a multitude of reasons, and isn't really keeping up with population growth, which means everyone's base costs are going up as real estate prices go up. -

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But the important part is, no, that's not how inflation works. The Canadian dollar isn't inherently becoming worth less internationally, it's losing buying power in Canada for a number of reasons directly died to either Government action or government inaction.

The actual relevant questions are whether it was avoidable, if they are doing something to solve the problem, what they are doing, and could they do better.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My point is simply that the factors contributing to inflation (outside private sector gouging) are largely tied to supply chain disruptions that have yet to be completely corrected and are being exacerbated by ongoing climate related slow-downs as well as labour disputes in the US & around the world. There are very few countries not seeing high levels of inflation and there’s no way the Prime Minister of Canada is responsible for all of it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Additionally in August Canada had the 10th best inflation numbers worldwide, just behind the US.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nothing wrong with demanding the government do more, but pretending our government’s response has been a complete failure while ignoring the fact that almost every country on earth is experiencing high levels of inflation is dishonest and cheap politics

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You wonderful neighbors of ours to the north still have it better than we do!! Jewish space lasers? And from a national politician, no less? Oh, and if our embarrassment of a last president was still in office, gasoline would be one dollar a gallon here. And it’s the current president’s fault that people are trying to immigrate here. Apparently, nobody came here in the past from other countries.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are better places in Canada then manitoba. I live here its a shithole getting worse by the day. I'm sure the conservatives didn't help that at all mind. It blows my mind how many major roads are outright closed this year because they are in such disrepair.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is genuinely shocking as Manitoba is one of the most racist places against First Nations people I've ever been to. It's been a few years since I've been there, though.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Congrats, you magnificent, beautiful nation up north!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And still only 54% of voters. I voted early. It was sooo easy. And I just don’t get why people don’t vote.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Especially when it's in law that your employer MUST give you time off to vote.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The widespread beliefs that: a) one vote doesn't make a difference and b) what's happening in the States can't happen here. It's a problem.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Took me 5 minutes to leave my apartment to vote and be back in my apartment after voting on one of the early voting days

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The blue is crazy.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I wish they'd bring in ranked ballots or proportional representation so that the 33% (at most) that votes for them would never be enough for a majority. So we'd get minority govs which would make them and all the other parties work together. It would handicap the cons so they couldn't gut everything because they wouldn't have the support. Whoever had the most would HAVE to work with the other parties. It's why the child tax credit increased, national $10 daycare and universal dental care happeme

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like ranked choice would give the NDP an easy clean sweep next federal election, maybe with some greens and independents mixed in.

Doubt they'd be able to hold the momentum, but that'd be fun to see for a term.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah there are a lot of liberal voters that vote liberal just to keep the cons out. I'd like to have ranked voting.

I'll redo that. "Huzzah! We are leaving the house so don't forget your cigarettes. I have my goalie equipment in the trunk of my car and a case of beer. Lets all go play some hockey at our local out door rink to celebrate!"

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In my neck of the woods we'd call a case of beer a two-four. Pads, yes, that one's compatible.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the ole 2-4. As weve aged we have taken more to 12er and the odd 15 pack. We cant pound em back like we used to. And, dont even get me started on how my gut makes lacing up more difficult.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can! I believe in you!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

One of the reasons Quebec is not fond of the RoC. We have a centre-right party in power right now, sure, but nationally we’ve never really been convinced by Tory arguments

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I suspect much of the far right upsurge in CA has to do with them being emboldened by the shit-show going on in the US. But I don't follow Canadian politics since I'm more concerned about the shit-show going on down here. My hope is we have reached the high water mark for these fascists.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

You've pretty much got it. Our big problem in Canada is that by *comparison*, everything looks fine - we don't believe we have the same kind of racism as the US, for example. Our American neighbors make us feel pretty good about how we're doing. Buuuut that means we overlook the issues we *do* have. And a combination of greater attention being shone on those issues in recent years, coupled with copy-cat conservatism has given us some troubles lately.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I agree with pretty much everything you say except the use of the term "conservatism". There is nothing conservative about MAGA or fascists. They are radical extremists.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Reactionary, not radical.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd say both. Reactionary in their yearning to return to the racial segregation or slavery of the past and their radical ambitions for a Christofascist state.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fair point, I agree.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think this is the start of Canadians realizing how badly right ring politics fuck over the people. Alberta is getting so fucked right now, people are pretty much being forced into accepting they can't afford/survive right wing exploitation. Utilities and insurance alone are through the roof, they're robbing us.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I hope so. But I'm afraid PP will be our next PM.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can confirm #Wetaskiwin all my bills are through the roof and going higher every month since Cons re-elected

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hey, don't worry! They'll ram through their pension idea and then once you're old and gray you'll starve to death faster and won't have to worry about bills!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m a teacher so my pension is already on the chopping block 😅

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The fucked thing is that most people lean left. But NDP and Libs split the left vote, so the Cons win. Also FPTP is a huge problem. Look at Ontario's last election. 41% of the vote to Cons, 24% NDP, 24% Lib, 6% Green. The last three parties all lean left, and make up 54% of the votes. On top of that, with 41% of the votes, the Cons got 67% of the seats!!!! That is absolutely insane. So in a province that leans left overall, we get a hard-right majority. It's fucked.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We really need either proportional representation or ranked choice voting. The current system is dumb as hell.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm against ranked choice. Would make sense in the US for voting for president, since that's a single person and proportional representation can't be used on a single person. But here, where we're always electing a body of people into Parliament, proportional representation is the far better option. Because then Parliament will directly reflect each individual vote. Like in the example I gave above, the Cons got 41% of the votes so they would get 41% of the seats instead of 67%. Period.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I can buy that argument. I like ranked choice a bit more, because I feel like having our parliament be party based is a fair bit detrimental. With ranked we get the chance to have independents, or party candidates more focused on local issues.

I could see proportional being amazing for anywhere big enough population wise, or small enough land wise, that the candidates inherently average out anyway, but we're not really either. -

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd love to not give a shit about what the party says, and just listen to our guys tell me what they want to do about, say, transit funding, or housing development, and rank them, and we're small enough that they can be that focused. Plus, as much as I know it could cause problems, I like the idea of more independents being elected, and office being more accessible to random idiots like us.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well have to see the next federal election before I agree to the quagmire part.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The problem is they're starting to get their platform and campaign ready for the next election, which means they're all doing the classic Canadian tactic of importing American issued that don't apply to us.

My best guess is that how the next election goes will be dependent how how the next US election goes, and how much US bullshit they can make us freak out about.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Completely agree. We're on the edge of the swamp and getting covered in mud, but will we fall in is the question?

Still, I almost with we had a Biden in charge of the Libs instead of JT - but like 25 years younger.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think the conservatives will win if the US has either a full republican or democrat government. One will be such a mess it'll probably spook us, the other will be effective enough to not have so much bullshit to import.

If they end up with the same thing as now where each party has one of the things and nothing gets done, I think it'll come down to if the liberals keep JT in charge of the party. If they do, it's either an NDP or conservative minority, and I'd bet Con. -

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is just my speculation though, I could easily be horribly wrong, obviously, and a lot can change in 2 years.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know. It's not as bad as you think, the most conservative/right wing stupid province of Alberta voted 44% for NDP. And is still going in the polls. That's why the dumb premier is trying to push through all that garbage to hurt people before they get booted out. Even Ontario. Nobody wanted the crack dealer. They just wanted rid of the fuck ups of the Prov liberals. 28% approval. And don't forget how these polls are done. By phone, so it's old people answering and it's still that low.

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Crackhead's brother was re-elected, so the liberals being ousted only really applies to his first term at best.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Before last night, with the exception of BC and Newfoundland, every single provincial government in Canada was either Conservative or some other brand of right-wing. Canada's provincial governments are extremely biased towards conservative at the moment.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The problem with Ontario "not wanting the crack dealer" is that they ousted an ineffectual Liberal government for an actually-harmful Conservative government. We *have* to stop this see-saw of putting conservatives in power just because we're mad at "the other guys". We have to stop the not-so-slow descent into US-style reactionary, identity politics, and then we can worry about getting back to electing progressives.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Electing progressives is exactly how we avoid US-style politics. Counter to Trudeau Sr., a man of action, the Liberals (provincial and federal) have talked an excellent game, but always fall short on delivery. It's been my greatest frustration as a supporter. I've been leaning NDP, waiting for even a shadow of the old man from Justin, but - nothing. When Singh zinged Trudeau with the words I'd been waiting to hear from him instead ("Just watch me"), it was the last straw. Full NDP supporter here

Alberta wants to pull out of the Canada pension plan and take it's money in the process. Ford (Ontario) is trying to sell the green belt to his cronies. Trudeau (who I hate) has been running a minority gov't for 3 terms. Saskatchewan is pushing for book banning and "parental rights". I'm going to have to disagree bud. Also. https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-records-lowest-voter-turnout-in-election-history-1.5931440

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Ford ain't trying, he already has. The old farts and rural southern ontario fucked us pretty bad.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Albertan here. Very few Albertans want to leave CPP. This is red meat Danielle Smith is shovelling out to her right wing talk radio base. Conservatives say they will hold a referendum on it (it would be pitchforks outside the Legislature if they didn't do that). Also, the amount she claims to be able to take is laughably wrong to everyone but her and a few others. By that rationale, Ontario could walk away with, like, 130% of the fund value. She's an idiot and I'm embarrassed for my province.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Alberta wants to pull out of the Canada pension plan and take EVERYONE'S money. They think they're entitled to over 50% of the money despite having about 10% of the population. Nice try, Danielle et al.

A coalition government with the NDP is about the best we can hope for right now. Between passively frustrated "fuck Trudeau" idiots, and outright fascist convoy idiots, our countrymen will *happily* put a conservative government in place. I don't think our country would ever recover from that, right now. The NDP isn't ready to lead at the federal level; their 'image' won't let them make the drastic immigration reforms we need.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I was mostly with you until that last sentence, what exactly are these drastic immigration reforms you believe we need? And what's the issue you think it will solve?

The entire nation is in a housing crisis, and inviting 400-500k newcomers every year is not helping. These are not all skilled workers filling empty nursing positions - most are PRs filling entry level, minimum or near-minimum wage jobs that set an artificial ceiling to the working class's negotiating power. Then factor the number of international students, many from India on fraudulent credentials, that create artificial floors for rental accommodations, reform is needed.
