good time to remind people that the new atheist movement that was predominantly based in the uk was a major force in legitimizing islamophobia past the religious right by portraying it as an issue that transcended religiosity. i still remember seeing a frontpaged post on this very site memorializing the charlie hebdo shootings on its anniversary, and the comments sections were full of open islamophobia under a thin veil of "critiquing religion."

In Western countries? Absolutely not. Islamophobia is something that at least half the country openly engages in. At least in the US, mainstream media feeds it, while the far-right media openly engages in it.
