Stop Throwing Away Orange Peel!

Make the Fondest Snack (Only 2 Ingredients)

creativity

snacks

orange

awesome

That's more than two ingredients, but I'm now giving those lemons on the counter a second look.

"Souped up recipes" on YT. She's great

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the two ingredients are sugar and more sugar. like yeah probably most things are kinda edible if you dilute them a hundredfold in sugar

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I fill a mason jar with orange peels, then cover with white vinegar. Put the lid on, let sit for 2-3 weeks. Pour resulting liquid into a spray bottle, and it's the best multi-purpose cleaner ever

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's 90% sugar!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't forget to wear a pith helmet

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I won’t eat the peel because:

>Pesticide residue
>Pesticides are frequently used on citrus fruits like oranges to protect against mold and insects (13).

>Though studies have found the inner fruit of oranges to have very low or undetectable pesticide levels, the peels contain significantly higher amounts (14).

Adds enough sugar to kill a 14th century peasant.

Diabetes....

Sugar with pesticides, great!

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 6

Don't worry, it's boiled in water with forever chemicals, so the pesticides are neutralized.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yes, that makes sense! Why didn't i think of that before! :P Solid comrade logic^^

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

so, basically just sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

“Only two ingredients.” Proceeds to add vanilla and orange juice.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

May not cost much but takes time and energy

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And 3 metric tonnes of sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

think of it as "upcycling" - you're finding value in something that would otherwise have been thrown away.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Apparently none of these folks mentioning 'all' the sugar have heard of 'candy.'

3 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 8

The video is framing it as being wasteful to throw away orange peels because they're also somehow edible. But then the video goes on to just dump a ton of sugar and orange juice all over them to make them palatable. It's a clickbait-and-switch. So, stow the sarcasm and pick up some reading comprehension, please.

3 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 42

What you read into it is of no concern to me.

3 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 6

*three to four ingredients

This is very similar to fruit preserve, which is really popular in Greece. Although you keep the syrup and boil the peel a lot more.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I use the syrup in sangria later.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

yeah no, I'm not making candied orange skins everytime i wanna eat an orange...

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The secret is in the sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Got ya. Orange flavored sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 3

Needs more sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 666 Dislikes 7

And a bit of citric acid in the ending coat

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you could try curing it

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I was thinking the same. Like how wasteful it is to throw something away, when with 10 cups of sugar and 2 hours of time, can make it palatable. Or ya know, just fucking eat it raw, save the time and the sugar. It's probably healthier, although terrible tasting.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Don't waste just this one scrap when you could waste time, energy, and more resources to make this treat*! *treat=sugar-covered scrap

3 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

I'd hate to be the one to clean that up. I have kids. I know.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because people without kids have never spilled sugar

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, just deep half of it in dark chocolate and let it harden. That's the way !

This is Mandy and her channel is Souped Up Recipes on Youtube. She makes some really good Chinese dishes that I've made from following her channel. Here's he free printable recipes: soupeduprecipes.com

3 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 4

I do a lot of her recipes. Great food! Worth the little extra effort that all the pre-cooking prep requires.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

100% agree!!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a lot of complaining about the amount of sugar for a US dominated site.

3 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 9

Way more sugar in English and Mexican candy.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I think the joke is "this is what we did with leftover orange peels: don't throw them away! They're tasty! Just destroy them with sugar!"

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

shes not the size i'd expect for that much sugar

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Diabeetus hits people differently!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the American way is to hide it by using five different ingredients that are basically all sugar so that sugar isn't the first ingredient on the label, and by not leaving big sugar crystals on the outside where we'd be forced to confront the reality that it's candy. A lot of people are aware of these tricks and suspicious of anything overtly sugared, because if they're willing to cover it in sugar then just how much is in there?

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

We automatically half the amount of sugar in American recipes for cakes and cookies etc when we make them. It’s just so much sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

heh... It's like people have never seen someone make candy before.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

My grandmother used to make this every fall and she could have gone 10 years or more with the amount of sugar shown in the video.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

basically you could do the same with wood shavings. just add sugar

3 years ago | Likes 1336 Dislikes 22

There’s 3x the vitamin c and a bunch of other micronutrients in the orange peel compared to its flesh, according to google. So while you could make any garbage appetizing by candying it, it’s a good idea to use nutritious garbage I think

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

you could try curing them

3 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 5

Stop throwing away your toenails.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

During first and second world war people in Finland used wood powder mixed to rye due the shortage.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's what most "parmesan" sold in the US is... wood shavings. Walmart was even sued over it.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

Blocks of cheese are always better than grated cheese if you are able bodied. Here's a sauce for anyone who is too lazy to google what you said. https://time.com/4226321/parmesan-wood-pulp/

A platypus imgurian? Parry the Platypus imgurian!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't forget to soak it in wood, first.

I'm a little late to the party here, but if you see cellulose in the ingredients of a packaged food, it's usually derived from wood chips.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes , the fondest snack from my childhood

*chindhood

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol I had a similar thought, everything is a yummy treat with the right sugar ratio.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then add more sugar

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

... Go on...

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Just get a spoon and a bag of sugar. Cut out the middle-man, I say.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

and more sugar...

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was a shitload of vanilla extract, too

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Remove the orange from the peel, remove the little slivers left of orange from the peel, remove the flavor from the peel, add orange back add sugar back, snack!! Like wtf.

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yeah some odd turns this takes. And way tol much sugar

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah. The McFlurry.

Someone should do a science fair project to study this question...

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh boy are you in luck...

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

don't forget the sugar. yikes, that's a lot of sugar

3 years ago | Likes 441 Dislikes 11

I mean it's a candy right? You don't eat it all in one go.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought the same thing—I'm diabetic.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

not any different to normal hard candy

3 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 2

Except if you don’t want to waste the peels, you now gotta eat 12 of these each time you eat an orange :D

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still less than a soda, cookie, donut or any other candy. This type of candy you typically only have one or two.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's candy, yo

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

That's way too much sugar

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 7

I mean so many people consume the same amount of sugar and don't care since they don't pay attention. This is better than 90% of the shit we have in America due to it not having any frm of corn syrup. Also as a treat having 6 of those is probably like a soda can or two of sugar. As a treat its fine, just as long as it's not an everyday snack.

3 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 4

I'd be interested to see how much added sugar there is in one of those rinds. It's 40-50g of sugar per can, and I'd guess that's more like 6 rinds to a single can

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Corn syrup is fine compared to the de-flavored white grape juice that gets used as a sweetener so a protect can be listed as "No Sugar added, No High Fructose Corn Syrup"

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Candied orange and lemon peel was pretty common I thought, decoration on cakes and whatnot

3 years ago | Likes 466 Dislikes 1

Yes, and it's also not very nice. Maybe the extra boiling and sugar here makes.it better than what I've had before, but it's usually gross.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

it was once. My grandmother made a few batches every fall/winter. She only used a small fraction of the sugar this OP did tho... sheesh

3 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Aye. Even if candied peel has fallen out of favour a well equipped kitchen has a zester for fruit sauces, ice creams or sorbet, the peel is widely used

3 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

The peel is also higly sprayed with toxins unless you have organic fruit money. :/

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Once went to a restaurant where they had an entire candied lemon for dessert. The inside was lemon sorbet and the outside was candied like this. Was made with enough sugar to kill a bull elephant.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Well yeah, but it's not like you're eating them every day..

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Never had it here, not popular locally at least

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah. We should do this with orange slices in Portugal. We even had chocolate covered orange slices. I think we went a little nuts, because my grandma would combine sugar and buttered popcorn.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I swear to you. They were one of the best tasting snacks as a kid before I suffered permanent anosmia.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Orangettes are pretty common over here, yeah 🙂

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ABSOLUTELY NO! Unless you buy oranges that _explicitly_ state that the rind is edible, assume that they are laced with pesticides.

3 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 8

Oh, definitely. It’s like with gift roses, people go I’m going to do x,y,z edible craft. Do you know how far those have traveled and how many really nasty chemicals they absorbed? If you don’t know then don’t do it.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Meh, what isn't these days? If it isn't pesticides, it's microplastics or heavy metals. We've screwed it all up--top to bottom--so just enjoy the ride until the cancer is detected because if one of them doesn't get you, another one will.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

In the EU, you cannot label produce as organic unless it fulfills a bunch of criteria, one being that the peel doesn't contain pesticides.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"*until* the cancer is detected"? Are you really going to stop eating pesticides once the cancer kicks in? Or are you going to knock it up a notch? Be late-capitalism! Embrace poison!

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Sigh. Pesticides and other agrochemicals follow food safety standards (if you're in a decent country) and are required to break down after a specified time or wash off during residue processing after picking. This also means agrochemical companies can sell farmers more agrochemicals. Humans dont have the metabolic pathways that insecticides target because we are different species, in a similar way that dogs and mongoose are immune to some snake venom. Stop hyperventilating over imagined threats.

Das gilt vielleicht nicht für Amerika, wo alles verdammtes Gift ist, aber Europa hat Standards.
