Does it work if the shoe doesn't fall off?

The key is to get the wine to push the cork.

Last time I wanted wine in a hotel room, I used the hotel pen and a chair arm rest to push the cork all the way in. Hammer the cork in.
I used the arm rest because it was already broken and came off the chair freely. Any suitable heavy hard thing would work.

A regular screw and a fork works, but winos just drive the cork into the bottle, since they don't need to close it back.

I tried this once after watching it on Youtube, and I must admit:can confirm.

Having a Swiss Army knife can make you extremely popular at parties. Even if you are only known as the bottle opener haver.

Uh.. my Swiss Army knife doesn't have a corkscrew. Has a philips screwdriver instead.

They really need to design an opener of some kind for wine bottles. Something easy, call it a corkscrew or something.
TheDudeOrHisDudeness
What if you forget it or buy wine on a whim? I've used this shoe method to open a wine several times, it works if you aren't and idiot.
Corrodias
Using "the shoe method" to open your old grape water that you forgot you'd have to open at some point isn't what I'd call "not an idiot". ;)
That just happens that you forget something. I also said "or buy wine on a whim", which isn't a thing that doesn't happen
TehSeksyManz
Sounds like sorcery to me

College kids don’t buy corkscrews lol. Some friends of mine once opened a wine bottle with a sharpie and a hammer

Our even make screw caps for wine. I'm no expert but apparently our doesn't alter the taste.
They do make those but just not for all wines.

Depending on markets and buyer preferences screw caps can be quite frequent.

I tried that on my favourite bottle of wine. Worked at it for over an hour and couldn’t get it to budge. Finally, used screw and pliers.
sharkhugs
I’ve tried it and it’s never worked for me, the pressure keeps it from moving
This shoe method works at least as good as pushing the cork inside. (Assuming you don't fuck up like the guy in the video)
That's a big assumption. Another option is just to drink something other than old grape water.
HedonistBeard
The one time this has been an issue I just used a regular screw and pulled it out with pliers.
Valkyr1987
Doesn't work very well with softer corks though, I have used the same method with varying success
