From April this year the law is changing in the UK so that actual, real, proper age verification will be mandatory to view any and all websites (worldwide) which display pornographic content.
If a website does not comply, all UK ISPs are required to block it. If they don't, they could be fined up to £250,000 or 5% of their financial turnover.
How will this age verification be implemented? No-one seems to have a real answer to that.
Age verification companies are fucking delighted. One has estimated they could get up to 25 MILLION subscribers out of this. Incidentally, that company (Mindgeek) owns Pornhub.
Other suggestions are that you're going to have to use a credit card, so you'll have to start handing out your credit card info to every sketchy website you currently go on.
Oh, and that means your credit card company's going to know your fetishes by the sites you've subscribed to.
What will be considered pornographic content? This is going to be set by the BBFC - the same people who classify the age ratings for films, games etc. How often have you seen nudity on here? We've all seen The Gif, right? Definately porn, making Imgur a website which displays porn, meaning Imgur needs to comply or be blocked.
Isn't this censorship? Yes, yes it is. It's the first mass-blocking of websites in a Western democracy.
Why are we allowing it? Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children? Seriously, that's the argument. The NSPCC did a survey and they found that "over half of the children and teenagers who viewed porn stumbled across it". I'm calling bullshit on that one, it sounds like the first panicked excuse they thought of "I didn't mean to look at porn it was an accident !"

Wait, how does this make people criminals? Any non-complying sites will be blocked. UK citizens just won't be able to access them, period.

DarkUranium
Seriously though, why isn't the EU stopping Britain? There must be some sort of a EU law or regulation against blatant censorship, no? (1/?)
DarkUranium
I know UK *said* they'd leave, but until they do so (or at least display intent to do so), they should still comply with EU regs, IMO. (2/2)
TheWombatStrikesAgain
No, the leave has been officially triggered and is running on a 24 month timer (which has about 13 months left). At this moment them (1)
TheWombatStrikesAgain
leaving could only be stopped if all of the other EU member states agreed on letting them stay. Until then they do still have to follow (2)
TheWombatStrikesAgain
The answer is complicated. First of all, not all censorship is considered equal. Second the need for consensus seriously hampers the EUs (1)
TheWombatStrikesAgain
capability to punish members for breaking the rules (as can be seen with the de-democratisation of Poland and Hungary). Also Britain is (2)

on its way out and things are already complicated - applicability of EU during the transition phase is one of the most debated issues. (3)

yep they run an Age verification system, which is what they're suggesting be used for this.

Yep and all the porn companies have an incentive to report there competition so they get blocked

The way it works is that they require all ISPs to block any website which has porn and doesn't have age verification. OK, for example: my
SoberAndBored
internet provider is Virgin. I like Pornhub. From April, I can't go on Pornhub unless they verify my age. If they don't verify my age,
SoberAndBored
Virgin are required to block all access to the website. If they don't, Virgin can be fined up to £250,000 or 5% of their revenue. An easier
SoberAndBored
way to do this might have been to have all ISPs verify people's ages, and then allow or block access to porn. However, we already have rules

t'was more of a joke. Fun sites, though, ain't they? :D
YesImkazuma
Ok no. There are SO many ways around this. Too many to count. Torrent sites be one of them. VPN is another. This is dumb.
firequencher
It's harder to filter and apply policy to traffic from just that country. Easier to apply to everyone. That's how we are handling GDPR
MegaDeuce
Don't worry dude, the Americans will set up pirate radio stations and describe illegal porn sites to you over the air.

purplesheep91
It's not like the cc statement will read "hardcore milf porn" it will probably be some company name which no one will notice.

FaultyStarsNoConstellations

VPN won't change what info the site requires you to give. i,e, you can't sign in to imgur without your user and pass, vpn or no
firequencher
Why are people downvoting you?
SpeakerForTheUnLiving
Cause I was off on the subject, VPNs often involve using a server in a different country, so it would work for this issue.
SpeakerForTheUnLiving
Nevermind I just realized I'm a fucking idiot.
AGracefulCombover
Right but it does change your location. So if the she verification is used on UK IPS, bam you get around it.
SpeakerForTheUnLiving

Why did it autocerrect "my" to "July"? It doesn't make sense. Just tried it too and there's no logical misspellings to make it autocerrect!
thepatioheater
But it didn't autocorrect autocorrect...
Gorgrim
But your ISP doesn't know who in your house is using the internet, or how old they are. So kinda moot point.
mediocrebacon
Very true, and I agree with it. But the other guy has a point. Technically whoever's name's on the contact is liable regardless who uses it.
Gorgrim
Liable maybe, but again not sure that really matters if the UK Government wants ISPs to ensure that the current user is 18+
Gorgrim
And the person paying for the internet and the person using it can be very different
mediocrebacon
From what I've read they don't want ISPs to check their users age, just block sites that don't have age verification and allow those that do
BlunderbussVigilante
Yup, even if your site uses HTTPS, your ISP still gets the IP address of what you're visiting. As does whoever hosts the DNS server you use.

This isn't for the children. The children are the excuse. Our PM Theresa May is virulently anti-internet and pro-surveillance.
AmArschdieRaeuber
It's the parents task to tell their children about porn and how it has nothing to so with reality. The government should stay out of it.
SlightlyFabricated
In theory. But I think govt has a duty to protect public health/welfare. Is this the best option? I dunno
AmArschdieRaeuber
We got sex ed for that. Porn is not that dangerous. Not even for minors
getyourp00pinagroup
but even if kids so stumble on it, has anyone come up with an explanation for why thats bad? or why its the governments job to stop it?
burntcustard
Plus (very) young people should be monitored while using the internet anyway. The rule is 100% people who want power/money exploiting

What do you mean? ???? utorrent is good way to download movies and games.
Krexnet
Use qbittorrent, free, open source, no ads
imnotgoodatdecidingthesetypesofthings
If you don't recommend it, then what do you recommend?
RadishIsAMeat
is that a utorrent pro only option? I don't see any way to encrypt in free version.
z3lfmoord
I use this program and didn’t know I could do that.
JustAnotherMeh
uTorrent has been known to install adware and bloatware for years. Their ads are also super annoying and invasive.
EneZio
Do yo only need to use a torrent to download shit?
WellIsThisTaken
Didn't utorrent secretly install a bitcoin miner at some point? I found it started serving me a bunch of adverts and bloatware, too.

Not finding this option on mobile app version

Dude make the post. I can't tell you how much I need it.

Yo if/when you make the post on this stuff, could you please let me know? I tend to miss things easily.

I already set up my systems for being able to surf porn without worrying about malware. I am job hunting right now so that takes priority
aPeniss
Don't tell people to use utorrent please.
imnotgoodatdecidingthesetypesofthings
What's better then?
giveintome
Not an expert but deluge is light and works perfectly on my system
ActuallyImSpartacus
Why?
JHawke
Insane hog on system resources filled with ads. With so many good alternatives around that is a bit useless.
kofoed
Please don't recommend utorrent. It's slow, full of ads and bloatware.. Get bittorrent or Deluge
imnotgoodatdecidingthesetypesofthings
If not utorrent, then what do you recommend?
NorthCrown
How is it slow? That still depends on seeds and peers. Yeah on the ads tho, but I never click those, anyway.
JHawke
Its slow as in the software itself is slow. Not as in it downloads slow. 244 torrents in transmission for example, uses 80MB ram. >
HowDoesOneDoThis
dot for later uk banishing use
Alkuam2
There's also Tixati.
lazerkitteh
I wouldn't recommend BitTorrent either, same shit as uTorrent. Deluge or qBittorrent are both great options. 1/2
Kyrorayne
Looks like I'll be switching to qBittorrent. As far as VPN clients, Hidemyass is a decent one, but I'm going to do more research on it
lazerkitteh
Plus, qBittorrent has a great search option integrated (I don't remember if Deluge has one too) 2/2

SoberAndBored
Way, WAY too late.
Ipostrandomshit
Yeah cos it passed in 2017 http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2017/30/contents/enacted
nickysjords
VPN then nae bather laddie. I did not really know about this happening.
adfvarsdvs45w
This law is somewhat more complex than this post suggests, read https://neilzone.co.uk/SCL_DEA_age_verification_and_online_pornography.pdf
Ipostrandomshit
OPs sources are all from early 2017. This law passed ages ago http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2017/30/contents/enacted
adfvarsdvs45w
indeed the law passed a while back, but the implementation date is this year.
adfvarsdvs45w
also n.b this only applies to sites making available on a "commercial basis" so probably not reddit, imgur etc
TheFunkyCodingMonkey
Tumblr!
HULKSONBUSSES
As Tumblr is a social networking site not a commercial porn site it appears it too will not be covered going by the pdf. Thank fuck!
SoberAndBored
It depends on how broadly they define "on a commercial basis". If you had a porn site that ONLY generates money from adverts, is that on a
SoberAndBored
commercial basis or not?
adfvarsdvs45w
That's a question that hasn't (AFAIK) been 100% answered. I think it'll definitely cover tube sites, can't see it covering reddit/imgur etc
Solkanarmy
are we not complaining about this, UK citizens, like the US did against net neutrality?
LordRawrsomeness
ha, we complain against our governement we get locked up.
Rifneno
That analogy does not fill me with confidence.
StarrryNight
Yeah it's not really something you want to be sharing on Facebook is it.
MistressLyda
It was quite a lot of work done against the ban on most BDSM production. It did not work. I suspect a lot of activists ran out of steam.
GalacticaPegasusValkyrie
Wait, so even bdsm is banned?
MistressLyda
Production of most BDSM porn is effectively illegal in UK yes. Oddly enough, FemDom was hit far harder than MaleDom stuff.
GalacticaPegasusValkyrie
So not only do you have to prove age, your fetishes are regulated by the government? What the fuck, England?!
GalacticaPegasusValkyrie
Sorry, your porn fetishes.
Treblaine
UK is one of the few countries left where people can be shamed for watching porn.
Ipostrandomshit
Not complaining because its been a thing for almost a year already https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Economy_Act_2017
Ipostrandomshit
or if you want a better source that isnt wikipedia http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2017/30/contents/enacted
LittleMissZombiebait
Of all the shit that is going on in this country right now, I'd be pretty pissed if this was the one thing people complained about
RadishIsAMeat
No because like with every other stupid law they come up with there are going to be thousands of easy work arounds.
cousteau
*changes DNS and suddenly everything works*
Badger96
Yes the government doesn't seem to understand how difficult it would be to actually block *ALL* access methods to *ALL* porn sites.
Radix865
Not to mention finding *ALL* porn sites to begin with.
cousteau
Probably easier to find all the non-porn ones.
Radix865
That would be a scary idea though, just marking the "acceptable" ones and all non-marked would get the mandatory verification or blocked.
