Splunk is free, until it isn't. It's expensive as all get out when you pay for them to host and analyze your data. The joke going around the industry is that this purchase price was cheaper than the licensing fees.

Misread that as "Turn Date into Doing", and thought that Splunk sounded like a great name for a dating app! How low are your standards? We can go lower!

It’s going to slowly die under Cisco like everything else that they do. It’s been going downhill for a while and hasn’t kept up with competitors as it should have. The only worse fate I can think of is being bought by Google - the place companies go to die. (Fuck Google)

they are doing this to get rid of competition

Splunk isn't really free though. The free license is limited in how much data you ingest as well as features. Our small DC of 4 rows 5 racks long can easily produce more than 500MB of data a day. It's only "free" for tiny installations. Believe me, I tried looking into it a few times over the last several years and even for self hosted they grab you by the balls.

ummm... so a whole bunch of software uses Splunk as a back-end. does this mean all those vendors are now going to have to hike prices in order to cover licensing costs?

Splunk or Elk? Splunk is the licensed, supported one. ELK is the freebie, no support, missing some major features.
