This one is kind of depressing/maddening

I didn’t realise I had this many of these.

This might be the entire next dump as well

I also feel the need to say I’m not American so a lot of this does not apply to me

I’m Australian, and we are definitely better than the US.

But not as good as I’d like

From what I’ve seen you guys have been there for a few years

I also spent all day removing watermarks to the best of my ability cause people keep complaining. If I don’t see one thank you I will go back to leaving them in.
Thank you :]

#9 It's always astounded me that an EMT in the USA makes about as much as a fast food cashier anywhere else in the world

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

So, about 300 dollars a month like a Moldovan minimum wage worker? I mean, you did say "anywhere else in the world," and I didn't even go outside Europe.

#13 I hate Musk as much as the next guy but that’s comparing apples to oranges. Taxing wealth vs income. We don’t have wealth taxes now. We should but we don’t.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Great post. As someone who has lived in the US and elsewhere, the perception of being the best countryin the world and what life is actually like for 90% of people. And even the 99% to 90% are all stressed out trying to be in the 1%.

It's awful and needs a hard reset

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#45 that's not true, some people died...

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

#1 Alternate alternate headline: the world is so fucked up that bringing another life into it to feels like cruelty rather than kindness. We don't want to live to be nothing more than a wage slave while the climate and society fall ever further into decline, and we don't want that for kids either.

1 year ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Reminder that adoption exists, and there are lives which have already been brought into the world and will likely grow into forgotten adults who have no support network to help them through the impending climate disasters.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not really an answer to not having enough for ourselves much less children

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#18 The actual answer to this is the same reason that trickle down doesn't work. When you give money to normal people, they pay bills and buy stuff and pay off debt, which stimulates the economy. When you give it to millionaires, they add it to their high score and don't buy anything that they weren't going to buy already, so tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires not only doesn't trickle down, it basically ruins the economy.

I tell this story a lot. When I was in college I was too poor to have insurance. I visited Norway and got really sick while I was there, and my girlfriend convinced me to go to a doctor. The doctor explained that because I wasn't Norwegian, he had to charge me. He saw me on short notice, did some kind of throat swab, prescribed me medicine and filled it from his own store or whatever. All that out of pocket? $33 USD. And the doctor apologized for being forced to charge me.

Canadian who lived in San Francisco and visited their (New Zealander) husband in the UK at Christmas 2000. Came down with strep throat on New Year's Eve. Went to a local NHS clinic, made sure I filled out the paperwork correctly indicating I was a nonresident foreigner, although a citizen of a Commonwealth country. Was expecting to pay a few hundred quid... was charged £6 for the visit and antibiotics.

I keep trying to get everyone in the US to read "The Healing of America" by T.R. Reid. The U.S. gets swindled every day by the healthcare industry.

It’s not entirely covered by taxes, there’s
a small fee even for locals. Sounds like he charged you this fee - the full price would have been much higher.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nope. I haven't heard any Democrats saying that they want genocide

How many Democrats support Israel's genocide? 90% or so? They may not WANT it, but they certainly place more value on their own finances and career.

The thing I don't understand is : why the hell american don't riot like we did ? Yes it's unpleasant, dangerous and some will get kill, but if you don't do anything, then just stop complaining ? It has been this way for so long now..

And 3-Police are often equipped with military-grade weaponry & crowd control equipment.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, sometimes people do, but there are probably multiple reasons it doesn’t happen more:
1-People have slowly become accustomed to (or were born into) these situations so they don’t notice how bad things are.
2-Very effective patriotism PR. The myth of the “greatest country in the world” gets repeated over and over again to kids growing up here. Pledging allegiance to our country/flag and reciting how “great” it is is literally a daily morning ritual for kids starting in kindergarten…

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

my guess is a frog-in-a-slowly-heating-pot situation. It's gotten worse slow enough over a long enough period that we forget this isn't normal. (BTW the analogy is flawed; frogs don't actually do that.)

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Our police officers would cry tears of joy at the chance to fire thousands of bullets into a rioting crowd. And they have the weaponry to do it. That's it, that's the difference.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Going to be honest here, guys who are trigger happy are quick to make you bleed, but will not want to take part in anything where they might. Remember Uvalde.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Absolutely, and we're not quite to the point where protests are armed yet. Even people who do wish to come armed are reminded that the stereotypical 2Aer is all for the other side and usually there to cause trouble. But things are getting worse, and we're escalating, too.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

correct, our police are very militarized and notoriously trigger happy. people know they'll get killed.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

#45 something happened... they murdered the journalist that reported it.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Nope, the journalist was murdered for trying to investigate an entirely different nest of organized crime.

Also, lots of laws were passed to make what happened there illegal, and lots of people were arrested and prosecuted in places where it was already illegal.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But that doesn't get talked about, because that might give us the idea that positive change is possible.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Right. Memes like "nothing was ever done about the Panama Papers" and "Epstein didn't kill himself" were created to demoralize us into thinking that the oligarchs are too powerful to fight.

Which does NOT mean that everyone who spreads those memes is doing so for that purpose. Most of them are spreading the memes to show off how much smarter they are and that they see through the lies.

Of course, I'm doing THAT here in this very thread. The difference is, I'm right.

#31 FWIW, the Monarch hasn't received a dime in tax payer money in decades. HRM travel and security costs as head of state are public costs, but the official residences of Windsor Castle, Balmoral etc are all self supporting. The majority of Crown wealth is entailed, meaning it has a lot of restrictions on how it can be used. Meanwhile, the Monarchy and royal estates bring hundreds of millions of pounds in tourism money to the UK economy.

ACAGB (All Canines Are Good Boys)

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Well, mostly it's like the situation with pit bulls. They get a bad rap bc of shitty owners. It's not a police dog's nature to be a shithead cop, they're specifically trained (nurture) to be shithead cop dogs. :( So I blame the human cops, not the dogs themselves.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

#7 Weird how attack dogs trained to attack people tend to attack people. Absolutely bizarre.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'll never find the YT clip, but it's one of those compilations of cop (car) chases . On one segment, a perp being chased bails his car and runs up a grassy upgrade heading for the woods. Four pursuing cop cars pull up and give foot chase. The last unit releases a dog. The dog passes cop3, trips cop2, and tackles lead officer, cop1. Cop4 now struggles to assist cop1 that's still being taken down by his K9. The perp is long gone.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#7 My cynicism is making me wonder what they did with the dog after this.

I wish people would stop comparing mortgage and rent prices. The actual mortgage may be less, but there are a shit ton more expenses when you own a house.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

Spent 8k on wall repairs a few weeks in to ownership
Was an expensive lesson

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You also get equity, whereas every rent payment is just tossing money into the abyss.

1 year ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Only if you maintain the house, however.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most expensive part of owning a house is labour. At least where I live, if you're willing to do the work you're only paying 15-25% the price of a reno.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This!! We renovated our whole house for roughly 20k, including 6k PCB and asbestos removal, because we invested SO fucking MUCH elbow grease and time. Both our families helped a ton tho, and we have a lot of professionals from different trades among family and friends.

Simply existing on the same planet as America is killing my mental health

1 year ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

Actually, the real problem for both of you is the internet. Without it, we would all be blissfully ignorant. With it, we're all ragefully stupid. 🤷🏾‍♂️

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 10

Without the internet we'd still be getting our news from newspapers and TV.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's my point. More than half of americans now say that their primary news source is rumors on social media. Result: rageful stupidity. Why do you think its wrong to get news from news outlets?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

fox news err entertainment that that still likes to act like the news, yeah you dont need the internet for the ragestupid when even normal "news" does it with out the internet for the boomers. least with the internet there is more option to try and find unbiased things, most local newsappers and local stations have a lot of obvious bias, and dont forget people that own that news media will feed you what they want you to hear to cause the ragestupid to get people to vote/novote how they want

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Downvotes don't answer the question. They just hide it. That's what social media "news" is. Why is that better?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

News requires greater capital to operate and so will always represent the interests of those who can afford to operate it. Social media requires a device and a network connection. There's still problems like bots and astroturfing, but it lets perspectives otherwise unable to have a serious voice join the conversation.

Also, it lets us see more diverse perspectives. Fewer Americans would know what the rest of the world has, we'd just know what we saw on broadcast and print.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My answer to your question is my answer to your question.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

#20 its my, albeit small, experience that, Americans are not educated to think critically. It seems to me a lot of their education is regurgitating stuff for a multiple choices test, but with no understanding of the application of the material.
This make them easy to manipulate, as their understanding simple falls to Higher number is either better or worse with no critical thinking of context or relevance for a given problem.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This. The US education system is not geared to producing critical thinkers, it's geared to producing good little indoctrinated worker bees. Never mind the prevalence of (pseudo-)Christianity and its anti-critical thinking nature.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

#2 lol yall didn't learn that. You were SHOWN that. Big difference.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

And on top of it, most didn’t actually pay attention when they were shown so the lesson never stuck.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right, we were all shown it. Some of us learned it. Some of us ignored it.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#5 He is correct in the sense that conservatives do report higher happiness and mental health (spoiler: its the ignorance :D)

1 year ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 2

Averageselfreportedpenislength.jpg

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The most ironic part about this self-reported happiness level is the 19% of unhappy conservatives are responsible for 99% of politically based murders in the US and 100% of the current administration's policies of cruelty and fascism.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Of course, the countries rated highest on the happiness scale are social democracies, so I assume that chart is only reporting on Americans.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

It's because these are "self-reported mental health", and it's against conservative principles to admit your mental health isn't awesome.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Unwavering selfishness and ego lead to happiness because you refuse to see beyond yourself and you're never wrong in your eyes. Every day you're winning whether you understand reality or not. Killing in the name of at a Trump rally? Why not? Rage wrote that song for conservatives. They claim it as their own without understanding it. This is the perfect example of selfish ignorant bliss.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Self-reported data from a right-wing thinktank.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And even that is a self reported metric so the conservative stigma against a need for help/perceived lack of strength/mental health care being a scam etc couldn't possibly skew it. They're not happy. They're walking around with an expression like a dried apple doll. They're just belligerently opposed to admitting that they're miserable because that would mean they need to take accountability and change something and heaven forbid the neighbors see.

1 year ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Omfg. It’s a lie, though. I spent the first 30 years of my life as a “conservative,” and I would have told everyone my mental health was perfect. In reality, I was angry about everything in the world, I wanted others to suffer like I was suffering, I thought about suicide all the time. Yeah, my mental health was great because I ignored every marker of good mental health because mental health is a communist scam, like all psychology. They really believe that. I was raised to believe that.

1 year ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 0

See, when all you know is cognitive dissonance, which breeds internal suffering, when you see others suffer externally, you can easily convince yourself you're doing better than them. But you're not, as you clearly figured out. You're just pushing it down and pushing it down, till it (literally in some cases) makes your heart explode when you're 40.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can't admit its bad if you believe its wrong to say it is.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This. I'm writing a book about growing up in neo-Christian fascism

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm writing a joke about a Vietnamese American growing up believing the Vietnam war was about Communism. Now I'm going to compare it to the American Civil War and make people squirm because fuck conservative fascists.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait, how does that work? I want to know this comparison, so I can fuck with people too and make them uncomfortable!

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. This is why. I was there too. Some of my family is there now. But when asked if depressed or anxious, no definitely not. You must suffer and hide it, that's just how it is for them.

1 year ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Accepting that mental health issues are real would be a big blow to the world view of these people. They cannot rationalize needing help with their mental state, just like they can't rationalize someone needing help getting started in the economy (hence bootstrap theory). The cost of acknowledging their cognitive dissonance would cause their entire paradigm to collapse, and they're FAR too cowardly to face that dissolution of self and ego.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As I understand it, for many of them it's linked to their religion, the fundagelical mindset, as I understand it, goes something like that: "if God is with me, I'm expected to be deliriously happy, so if I admit that I'm miserable I'm confessing that I'm not a True Christian™."

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It’s not that for anyone I’ve known. Christians I know don’t generally believe you’re supposed to be happy. They think almost the opposite, that they’re righteously angry; and all their problems are actually the result of society’s general moral decline. Of course, their evidence for this decline is that trans and gay people are not lynched daily.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's definitely some of it. If you have God, you should have all you need. So admitting you need more help is like a slap to God or admitting you're not devoted enough.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Alternatively, god is all you need, and you are restricted from enjoying the earth (carnal pleasures) because it will help gain you greater joy than can be imagined in heaven.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which is really weird when you think about it. The Bible talks about suffering and needing help all the time.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0
