Humans do some really messed up shit to eachother when they put their mind to it... but very few of them are hundreds and hundreds of pounds of muscle, claws, and jaws. When nature decides to throw hands, we're outclassed.
Personally Id choose the weird dude. Best case senario: I add to my list of weird friends. Worst case: Ive got a fighting chance to be the one still standing.

But statistically speaking the bear is WAY more likely to wander off than attack the person. The scenario as I understood it isn't that the woman is like dropped into battle and has to pick an opponent. Just the majority of women feel safer with a bear in her presence if she's alone in the woods vs a strange man, and I think that's legit. Odds are against her if the bear attacks, but odds are Way in her favor that the bear won't attack at all.

Bears don't want your attention. Unless you're a sick calf, you're not an easy meal that will get them calories without risk of injury. Jeez, even garbage bears are manageable.
A bear will NOT stalk you online and go to your work or try to insert itself into your life or follow you down the street.
If a bear mauls you, people will believe you.

If you haven't seen it, then you haven't been exposed to a broader response. I've seen many responses from insecure men who have been petulant, resentful, angry, essentially highlighting the reasons why women chose the bear.
The incels are furious because they think this puts them even further away from getting laid. e.g. a mass brainwashing attempt to turn women away from men. Not realizing it's just them.

Why are they totally right? Are men that bad in the US? I know some are, but so many? I'm not a guy, and after some severe thought, I feel this has become a make men feel bad thing. Yes, there's still a world to win in equality, and some men behave badly, but let's stick to facts and don't make women extra scared. I don't think that helps. (All the daddies' princess stuff doesn't help either). All great dads are men, too. And those you'd happily meet in the woods.

I'm a guy and my first reaction from a woman's perspective is the bear. In the States 1 in 6 women is raped fully or partially. Personally, I think it's higher because maybe women don't report. Out of all of the women I know, probably 75% have been attacked in their lifetimes.
This doesn't include domestic violence which is something like 1 in 4 women.
This isn't a make men feel bad thing, this is a reminder to those good men to hold the others accountable.

I'm glad I could offer a better explanation. Essentially, really insecure guys angry that women would risk being mauled rather than be alone with them (they're taking it very personally, and there are a lot of them. And in the process, proving why women choose the bear.
My wife and I had a really great conversation about this. If I was a woman, I'd choose the bear.
It's a striking spotlight on a very serious problem.
