Covid is shifting towards endemic, and that's a good thing. Such things can be controlled (like with the flu) with masks, distancing, etc, to prevent spikes. Cases/test positivity are still high in places, but nationally, infection rates and hospitalizations are falling. Not to a good baseline yet, but clearly falling.
Now, here's the thing. Endemic means it's always present. So, during waves/spikes, you enact measures to mitigate it. Wear an N95/K95 when in public spaces, etc. Nothing huge. No massive shutdowns, just occasional heightened measures being enacted. Like during a nasty flu season.
But emphasis on 'enact measures.'

This touched a nerve. I'm fuming at my desk.
In Utah (where I'm at), there are no measures for masks, distancing, etc. There haven't been for some time. This is the case with other States as well.
Now, Covid is NOT like other respiratory virus's. 10-30% of people who contract it and have symptoms may develop Long Covid. If vaccinated, that rate appears to be lower, but we don't know by how much.
https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2021/09/29/1041501387/coronavirus-long-covid-study-plos-medicine
So when the current variant is nearly as contagious as the measles, that should at least worry you a bit. Not make you shut yourself inside your home, but at least wear a mask, vaccinated or not, if around a ton of people.
Let me reiterate. If you get symptoms, especially if unvaccinated, there's a 10-30% chance you will have lingering, potentially debilitating symptoms we don't know how to cure. We don't even understand why it happens. Brain fog, lung issues, clotting- it's a laundry list of problems.
And we don't know why. Personally, I find that worrying.
As someone with a family member who medically can't get vaccinated, and another who was extremely-high risk for a time...I'm just tired of this rhetoric. This wouldn't have touched a nerve as much aside from the fact many individuals haven't ever taken this virus seriously. Now that levels are declining, it just give them another excuse for it.
So, to anyone who says 'some people' 'could stand to take this less seriously' and 'it's just another virus' and flaunt not wearing a mask, may I offer this immature, succinct, but genuine rebuttable.
I still post weekly updates on Saturdays. I'll be streamlining the updates and posting them both to here, as well as a new platform in the next few months for multiple reasons, one being...well, people have moved on from the Pandemic, on Imgur and off.
The politics/measures being lifted are another indicator of that. Originally that was planned during May, but since the world is moving on, I may speed that up. It has been an absolute pleasure of mine to help so many people prepare and stay informed, but...well, the world is moving on, unless I'm vastly misinformed.
That said, I'm not going to stop informing and helping others prepare. It's what I love to do. I just need to slim it down from previous, large update format.
To not end this post on too much of a downer note, may I offer this request this Sunday.
Be a good neighbor. The world needs more of that nowadays. Look out for each other. Call a friend, check up on a grandparent. Make the world a bit better for someone today.
From a tired and fed-up Imigurian,
-Bunker John
Post-Most-Viral edit:
The fact this post, with a more ranting/frustrated spin gets the front page while my regular unbiased/not emotional updates no longer do (for months now) is another reason I'm winding things down. Imgur, like other social media/news sites, gravitates to the emotional and the negative. I'm not surprised, just an interesting observation. I guess I'd feel better slowing down/changing the updates if it was due to COVID being over, rather than being ignored.
I've never wanted to add to said negativity, and today was the obvious exception due to this headline.
That said, I really appreciate all the supportive words. I've continued this a lot longer than I intended largely due to knowing there was a need, and helping others prepare is truly a passion of mine. Thank you so much for your kind words =) Know that I read every single comment and try to reply to them all!
Be good to each other, and stay safe. I'm not going anywhere, just frustrated and realizing I need to shift some things around.
Again,
-Bunker John.

You've been a pillar of our community here Bunker John. I don't comment hardly ever but I read your posts and appreciate the work you do
BunkerJohn
I'm happy to have done so! I guess I'd feel a lot better if I could tone down updates due to Covid being gone, rather than ignored.
daschmit
I admit I've fallen off the last few weeks. As a teacher it's been rough but since the beginning truly appreciate all the work you have done

I certainly don't blame you. Everyone is sick of things to varying extents.

I'm going to continue to wear my mask and get any vaccinations I can. My state is just lifting its mask mandates. Luckily my county isn't.

Thank you for everything

You are most welcome.

It’s finally getting bad in New Zealand after prepping for 2 years; we’re at 95% vaccinated but it’s still scary having +2500 cases
BunkerJohn
The variants have put such a spin on measures it's crazy. What works for base covid just doesn't work for Omicron.
Vandalhaven
At least your country is taking it seriously.
Snotty128
95% of us our. That’s still leaves thousands of muppets filling the streets and flinging their own poo at the police
ImHereForExplicitContent
Only 5% of your population are batshit? Lucky bastard.
Vandalhaven
US here, care to trade?
TheobromineAddict
I'm not happy about an endemic disease that mutates frequently. Sooner or later we'll see a highly infectious and DEADLY variant.
Velisity
probably won’t even tell us, and “let it wash over America” do we don’t end up in lockdowns again. Ppl start dying they’ll blame omnicron
BunkerJohn
You're not wrong. Wish you were, but yeah. COVID is such a novel virus...(mutations, how it affects the body, etc.)

My SO is on immunosuppressants and we're trying to figure out how we're going to live from now on because of this, even without new variants

What's really sad, is a virus like that (or Ebola) likely wouldn't have gotten to this stage because it's so visible, brutal, and obvious.
2fligh2high
That would be bad from a covid point of view. If it kills everybody it has no hosts to spread to. Ending up as a endemic is a virus big win!
Plutonimus
You're one of the good ones OP.. thank you for all your work
BunkerJohn
You are most welcome =)
BlueDsc
I'm vaccinated and take it reasonably seriously and got Covid and am still fucked up by it over a month later. Cox can go fuck a cactus.
BlueDsc
Take it less seriously my fucking ass. If the goddamn world as a whole could have taken it seriously maybe we could stand to do that now.
BunkerJohn
It's the fact COVID is largely invisible. Just plays into everything. I hope you feel better soon! The response in general was a mess.
BlueDsc
I'm fortunate cause my long lasting symptoms aren't too severe, but they're still very annoying when they hit me, and they hit me often.
BunkerJohn
That's good to hear- I do hope it becomes less and less over time!
BlueDsc
Thanks. It's certainly gotten a lot better so hopefully it continues that trend.

BunkerJohn
One word. Ugh.
kaegro
After talking to biochemists and my pharmacist sister and reading up on what they told me, the best explanation for long covid is thus:
kaegro
It binds to a receptor (ACE2) that can impact inflammation and oxygen transfer, among other things. Covid is a circulatory infection
kaegro
Repeating this is second hand information at best - neither person I talked to is working with covid directly, but it is their field
BunkerJohn
That is fascinating! I've read that Covid is more of a blood/circulatory disease than a respiratory one in some aspects, so that makes sense
ParadosaArcticus
There are other versions too - that it can reactivate EB virus or that covid damages immune system.
BunkerJohn
Hmmm. It sounds like a mess to say the least. Just a conglomeration of complications.
Kitakita
Americans are about to spend a shit ton of money on things they don't need with money they don't have.
BunkerJohn
Reminds me of lymes disease. Just because you ignore a problem...doesn't mean it isn't there.
kaeldra
I feel every bit of this in my soul. As someone with terrible covid anxiety who just found out I have an auto immune disease. Fuck people.
BunkerJohn
I'm very sorry to hear your diagnosis. I hope you can find some sure-fire treatments, or at least manageable measures.
kaeldra
Thanks so much. Your posts have really been so helpful the past 2 years. Hope you're taking care of yourself and staying semi sane <3
BunkerJohn
Of course, and I'm so glad to hear that! I'm honestly doing really well- this headline really just ticked me off for a few hours, and >
BunkerJohn
it has been such a long slog, to hear the utter dismissal was just downright insulting.
ssimaniac
Also, cases are "dropping" because self test kits are everywhere. Almost no one reporting it. My fam just got it, we did self test.
BunkerJohn
That's...a point I didn't consider. Test Positivity is dropping though- even with reduced testing, so that's a good sign.
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
Endemic disease presence is the participation trophy when compared to disease eradication in a pandemic. Thnk you for all your hard work @OP
tehpipe
Covid is zoonotic - it cannot be irradicated. Becoming endemic after only a few years due to worldwide vaccination is unprecedented success
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
¹Yes, SARS-CoV-2 origins stem from a viral spread from animals to people, but it's incorrect to believe that diseases cannot be eradicated
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
²simply because of their origin. The virus jumped species but in its nascency there was an opportunity to stifle it by depriving it of hosts
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
³The reason we create vaccinations: deprivation of hosts is how diseases are eradicated but this is best achieved before rampant mutations.
FuzzyX
Endemic certainly means that humanity lost and the virus won.
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
The "good" thing about viruses is as they mutate they tend to become less deadly. So humanity will be pretty fucked up but mostly alive.
vladimirpurrtin
blzrdphoto
Lol no there wasn’t. Vaccines should have been mandated because of public health instead of being politicized. Society screwed this one.
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
¹Part of that is changing our mindset about disease. Mandating wouldn't have mattered since there were countries that couldn't access enough
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
²vaccines to begin w/. Even if we had mandated, it wouldn't have stopped the emergence of Omicron in S.Africa. We need to think globally.
vladimirpurrtin
I agree. But the “participation trophy” made me laugh.
blzrdphoto
I don’t look forward to the next pandemic…. Which will probably happen more quickly than any of us suspect.
ImHereForExplicitContent
Based on nothing, I think you're right. I'm still waiting for things to go back to 'predecented' though.
vladimirpurrtin
And we still won’t be prepared. :/
BunkerJohn
That's a fantastic way of describing it. That said, how infectious COVID is, I think endemic was the only option. And you are most welcome.
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
At this point it is. Globally we lost our window of opportunity for prevention& eradication but perhaps we can learn before others occur.
PikaChunin
Hahaha. Aw, lookit you with your optimism. Billionaires made out like bandits during it. I'll be surprised if they don't stoke the next.

I appreciate your optimism, but SARS and MERS were the wake up calls we didn't answer. I'm skeptical that most govts will take precautions.
EvilAbedsBoneSaw
HIV was our wakeup call & we hit the snooze button w/Ebola, SARS, & MERSA. The sad fact is none of us think global disease prevention.
TheSupremeCrabMaster
We won't learn. I guarantee it.

Funny you mention chicken pox @op, covid vaxxed+boost here, still caught in Jan. 3 weeks later, now have Shingles, on my head & its all pain
TurdHurdler
I’m so sorry that happened to you. Have you been vaccinated against shingles?
BunkerJohn
Oh jeez. I'm so sorry to hear that =(

Look up polio. The basic symptom was GI upset. The paralysis affected about 0.5 percent of the cases. “Long-Polio” as it were. Familiar?

Hmmmm. I didn't know that about Polio. Familiar indeed.
dedpaen
Will we be comfortable with an endemic Long Covid? Time will tell.

Personally I certainly won't. But yep, we have to wait.

Still going to wear a mask when I go out. I have no idea when I will feel comfortable enough to stop. Appreciate all you do BJ
BunkerJohn
Same here. Feels odd to not in the office (vast majority are masked, and wearing an N95 would be a nightmare, tbh.) And most welcome =)
WisconsinHome
Why a nightmare?
BunkerJohn
N95's are uncomfortable to say the least, let alone for 8+ hrs daily. Thankfully, the offices are separated (not cubical) so risk is low.
WisconsinHome
That’s good. N95s don’t seem to bother me, at least not for 5-6 hours
BunkerJohn
Yeah, I have crazy respect for nurses who have to wear them. It's a balance of risk vs staying sane.
vladimirpurrtin

Also from Utah. I was furious when I read this last night. My 2 year old spent 4 days in hospital from a standard cold previously.
blzrdphoto
I can’t feel like a good parent and risk him getting anything until he can get vaccinated. I’m so angry right now.
ImHereForExplicitContent
Same situation. Angry and frustrated are something of a constant now, unfortunately.

Not approved for anyone under 5
OneOfTheEnemiesWithin
I’m so sorry. That has to be so scary for you. This pandemic is the only thing that makes me happy my daughter is grown. ?
BunkerJohn
It's a mess. I'm 3x vax'd, masks, etc, but how long? I don't have an answer; especially when people won't look out for each other. I hope >
BunkerJohn
your child stays safe through all of this. It's hard on the kids especially.
blzrdphoto
Also have 5 year olds that want to go to school. It’s a nightmare scenario.
mydogisbetterthanyourdog
People are surprised my almost2 year old likes people because she’s a covid baby and it breaks my heart. How many of them will be messed up?
BunkerJohn
Just...yeah. It's a lose-lose situation, especially during developmental years. I honestly don't have solid recommendations for that.
QuitLookinAtMineAim
Ok, but when can we relax. I've been holding the line in a red state for nearly two solid years. Triple vaxxed and had omicron. When?
waitwtf
I feel like his is going to continue to be a constant from now on. Like the flu...
TheJuiceLoosener
How many new hospitals? How many new testing/analytical laboratories? New training programs for resp therapists? Dreaming isn't enough
OneTimeInBandCamp
It's weird, I was just in the UK for a week for work. Up and down the country, on public transport. Masking anywhere was exceedingly rare.
blzrdphoto
I’m going to continue to hold strong until my immuno compromised kids can get a vaccine.
whysomuchdoghair
It's ridiculous they keep prolonging that. Especially when it worked for the under 2s.
NaughtButOne
Depends. How many of your friends or family are you willing to let die because you're tired of it?
QuitLookinAtMineAim
Nice emotional appeal, but tbh, most of them have had it. Are you proposing something that would help? I'm listening
NaughtButOne
Yes. We keep going as we have been. Doing our best and taking measures to stem the spread. We don't stop because you're bored.
Kittynomnoms
We played softball with morons for too long and now you'll probably have to be concerned about Covid for years. Shoulda been hard lockdowns.
ValiantToast
I don't think it's that simple. Both Delta and Omicron originated outside the U.S. and I think it's tough to pin the entire issue on
ValiantToast
Unvaccinated Americans. This is coming from a fully Vaccinated Californian.
Kittynomnoms
Okay, but how did they spread globally? If people aren't flying around the world for no fucking reason they would have been less of an issue
QuitLookinAtMineAim
Idk if it would have helped, but trying hard while neighbors actively worked against me was painful
OlderWiser
What does that mean exactly? You've been holding the line in a red state?
witchtrash
Can’t speak for them, but to me it means getting triple vax/masked up/being extremely careful in a state where it feels like no one else is.
OlderWiser
There aren't any states where everyone is being careful & getting vaxxed etc is just good judgement. Nothing to do with where you live.
witchtrash
Ok but here, throngs of people were literally burning masks in front of the capitol building like *most* of the people have bad sense
OlderWiser
I don't get the part where if others are idiots I or whoever should be too.

QuitLookinAtMineAim
Literally everyone that wants a vaccine has gotten one. How long till we accept that it's here to stay, and we will never convince everyone?
HoneyBunchesOfStoats
did you forget children under 5? that's still a huge chunk of people that can't vaccinate
mattituuude
Idk why we ever had to convince people rather than just making it mandatory
ValiantToast
I think the point of the post is that we're transitioning to what you're describing right now.
QuitLookinAtMineAim
If you don't have a vaccine by now, you probably aren't getting one. I'll still wear a mask and stuff, but we gotta move on some day.
QuitLookinAtMineAim
Can we put up a benchmark of what we want to see to relax? I appreciate your work but we can't be at high alert forever.

I don't disagree; but my point isn't that we need to remain at a super high alert level. As it moves to endemic, measures should be relaxed-
