Okay, story time: A few weeks ago, I picked up a copy of Metroid for the NES from a local record store. At least that’s what I thought…

When I inserted the cartridge, I found that someone had pulled the old switcheroo, and swapped out the board for M.U.S.C.L.E. Finding it to be an oddity, I decided to share my find on Reddit. My post was up for a couple of hours before I got a comment from someone claiming to be the person who accidentally traded the game into the store (different location, but part of the same record store chain). According to him, the same thing had happened to him when he bought the game years ago, so he decided to keep it as part of his collection, but had traded it in with a bunch of other games by mistake. Not going to lie, I was a little suspicious of it at first, but he DM’d me, and correctly identified the store without me naming it in the first place. It was crazy. Like, what are the odds?

We got to talking, and agreed to meet up so I could return the mixed up cartridge for a legitimate copy of Metroid.

And now I am back home with a real copy of Metroid, as well as a neat story to tell.

Oh, he also asked if there was anything else that would like to trade for. I ended up trading him an extra copy of a vinyl that I had in my collection for a few more games.

I still have my Zelda game! I’ve been toying with buying a “new” old Nintendo and SNES to play all the Mario games. I’m feeling very nostalgic.

I had an FC Twin back in the early 2000's and it worked really well for an off brand console

It's best if you get a CRT too. Or at least a retrotink or something similar to use on a modern TV. But CRT is the way to go for old games.

But you didn't give his reason for doing it?

Swapping the boards? He didn’t do that. The game was like that when he got it. He had meant to keep it as part of his collection, but accidentally traded it in with a bunch of other games.

It’s a later release of the U.S. version of the game. The image of Samus was the one used for Metroid II.

It's the equivalent to the greatest hits version.
