Routered to smooth the edges
Painted with a light coat of red and then hand sanded to smooth finish
Paint almost gone
Stained and cleared
Finished fire ax. Thanks.

As someone who swings axes for a bit of medieval violence stay away from knots drastically weakens the handles. Nice axe though.

North America. Not oak. Bark was all wrong, ring structure, small sap-wood. Red elm is Ulmus rubra under the ULMACEAE family.

Generally you'll put in a wedge at the top. It's not in the pictures, but usually the top bit has a cleft in it where you put the wedge in.

That's typically done with a wedge. You cut a slot in the head-piece and then wedge another piece of wood in there to secure it.
