I served him midnight room service at a hotel in Toronto 2 weeks before he passed. He was unfortunately very clearly in the depths of depression. I delivered enough food for 4 or 5 people to his room where he was alone. An hour later he called down, probably in tears, and asked me to never allow him to do that again. Disturbing experience at the time, contextualised by his death. Great entertainer.

Now I don't want to start a fight but. I gotta say, this dude is one of those American comedians I never really got. Is there like another level to all the physical waving and shouting? Because everything I ever saw him do has basically been shouting and a lot of waving of hands and stuff like that. I don't really even get this bit here.
Most of my fav comedians are American, but he's like just so impenetrably American I don't get it.

Maybe this will help? There's no classic joke here. What's fun/funny is watching a guy of his charm handle a question that is out the depth of his happy-go-lucky dumb-guy persona. The unpredictability of what he'll do with that, the way he breaks down, etc. It's not hilarious but if you are into Chris Farley, you get pulled in and enjoy it. Not many folks could do this self-effacing bit so well.

I don't think of him as a comedian. He's a comedic actor. He's all about comedic timing and over the top personality and characters. I'd watch one of his movies to understand where his strengths lie.

I wouldn't go that far, I mean I love Ren & Stimpy and Beavis & Butt-Head and a lot of stuff that's called very stupid by a lot of people.
But do you have anything to say about his style of comedy that might help me understand it?

For his other talents watch his movies with David Spade - especially Tommy Boy. His acting was completely unrealistic, and it was supposed to be, but his comedic timing was perfect. They were a great comedy duo. Clearly Lorne Michaels & SNL only wanted his physical stuff. I think if he had more time & more projects he would have given us more variety. Cocaine really ripped everyone off.

For me at least, it was his commitment to the gag. Like, I hate to say that other comedians aren't giving 100%, but regardless of what number you use Chris gave 3-4x as much and had 0 hesitation about looking dumb.
He takes something that normally wouldn't be all that funny and he dials it up so wildly far that it becomes absurd. Then he finds a way to give it even more energy.
