They would actually make entire magazines, photocopied or mimeographed. They'd put together submissions from a whole bunch of fans - articles about the cast and the universe, fan fiction, fan art, photographs, a letters column anyone could write in to - and print them up, then mail them to subscribers or sometimes just anyone who sent a letter expressing interest. Fanzines are an amazing part of fandom history that have sadly declined these days, but they're worth looking back at.

I watched through most of classic Star Trek, and the movies with the classic cast, and it is very very obvious that Kirk and Spock are basically married. Now, of course, that doesn't automatically mean they're fucking. But they're hetero life mates at the bare minimum.

I'm just getting into Star Trek. I've watched the first season of Voyager, and the first 1.5 seasons of TNG. May sound like an ass here, but I like Prodigy and Lower Decks better.... but those were like the gateway drugs that got me interested in the live action shows. Any recommendations, thoughts, or should I just keep trucking along on Voyager and TNG? Maybe specific episode recs??

TNG Season 1 is so off that when Riker shows up with a beard in season 2 "Growing the Beard" became a euphemism for a show, writing team, and cast finding their winning formula. While TNG is episodic there are specific episodes and events that have lasting repercussions. Season 3 sets up the rest of the show, S4 is peak TV. 5 continues the greatness, 6 and 7 weaken but still have banger episodes. DS9 is fully serial and gets better the further it goes.

Just keep in mind that TNG is very rough for the first 1-2 seasons. They're trying to find their footing and figure out how to make the show "feel". After TNG I would highly recommend Deep Space 9. Voyager is good, was my first real hook on ST as a whole. But it has its issues.

You kind of need to watch all of TOS, the films, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and even Enterprise, to get all the references in Lower Decks. I know it's a heavy lift, but a good goal for the long term. Voyager is a roller coaster of quality. Enterprise was beat up by executive meddling screwing over the concept. However when it is allowed to rest on its concept Enterprise is pretty good. If Season 4 of Enterprise had been Season 2, the show would've gotten seven seasons.

TNG takes about 2 seasons to find its feet, I think. I am tremendously biased toward it though, I grew up on TNG. Lwaxana is a queen!

Stick at it. Early season TNG is literally still defining modern Braga era trek at this point and Voyager is... um... a legally obligated chore from start to finish because they wanted to make DS9 but CBS/Paramount told them they had to make a classic Monster of the Week style Trek show as well.

S1 of TNG is notoriously not great. Seasons 2,6,&7 can be a bit rocky. Seasons 3-5 are some of the best sci-fi TV ever.

Of course, YMMV. Everyone has different tastes. If you feel the same way by season 4 then you should probably just abandon it.

Voyager is generally not very good. It's got some bright spots, but overall it was pretty meh. DS9 is great, TNG is quite good (earlier seasons will vary - season one especially). If you're finding TNG ok stick with it as it very much improves, but I wouldn't bother with Voyager if it's not clicking.
As for episode suggestions, for TNG off the top of my head, Darmok. Season 5, episode 2. Generally considered one of the best - if you don't like that one, TNG might not be your cup of tea.

I like Captain Janeway, and I have hope that it will get better, but I kind of hate Neelix (am I an asshole?). Prodigy made me want to watch Voyager first, but after the first season, I've been watching TNG, and I like it better.

I thought season 1 was pretty weak, same with Voyager.... but I'm not giving up. And I like that DS9 is almost a consensus #1 pick. I'm kind of saving it for later!

I'm currently watching TNG The Measure of a Man (S2E9)....about trying to replicate Data. And yeah.....this is fucking great!!! Sir Patrick Stewart is so good!! I'm definitely in it for the long haul, but I appreciate the recommendations. My brother has never watched Futurama, and I gave him a short list of episodes to give him faith in the quality of the show.

The Measure of a Man is the first truly great episode of TNG, and it’s far from the last one. Around season 4 it is regularly hitting those kinds of highs. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it, TNG is fantastic.

My dad likes to tell to the story of how he was just about ready to call the tv station and tell them they were screwing up the broadcast by the second ad break of that episode. That’s one of those episodes where you the first time watching experience is truly a joy.

They are good at everything they do, despite it ranging from action to academics, there is hardly any personal growth in the characters just direct conflict with the antagonist. The main difference is they were written as the person the writer wanted to be, while Mary Sues tend to be written as someone the writers wants to fuck. But since most guys want to fuck James and Indy¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mary Sue's are the author inserting an idealized version of themselves into the narrative. They are typically written by young female authors, not male authors writing their idea of the perfect girlfriend into the story.

I gotta agree with the other guy, not because Jean isn't a self insert, but because she's practically useless until she gets the phoenix force. She faints in every fight or at the slightest bit of exertion, and isn't smarter or better than most of the other characters. Admittedly, the newer films have made her a Mary Sue due to bad writing, but she initially was not.

Mary sue does not have to have anything to do with self insert (although it can be and often is). It's just a character (usually young woman) who's basically good at everything for no reason, unrealistically free of weaknesses, and doesn't really have character flaws.
