As I posted in another comment thread, most countries have government exemptions to firearms restrictions. As official gifts, these are property of the nations, not the individuals.

No, I mean what changed about the Colt Python? Old guy with a giant arsenal once recommended it to me as the "gun to get if you're only getting one." I thought maybe a Colt 1911 but he said nah, the Python is more reliable because it's well designed & simple, less working parts etc.

Back in the 1960s-1980s, Colt was staffed by UAW union gunsmiths... they were artisans and geniuses, centuries of experience on the manufacturing floor, every revolver fine tuned... and the Colt Python was considered the epitome of perfect revolvers (ignoring Manurhin for a moment)... in the 1980s and 90s they fired all of them to save money... and everything at Colt got shittier and shittier and they stopped making the Python.
Then Rick from The Walking Dead carried a Python and they ....

... become the hottest guns on the planet again.... Colt tried to cash in by bringing them back and charging a massive premium for them (when a working S&W 686 was $800, Colt wanted $1800 for a new Python that didn't work)...
Colt just didn't have the skillset to build it.

My buddy bought one and deeply regretted it. Quality control was all over the place.

They were shipped with horrifying defects.... cylinders not cycling, bad timing (cylinder not lined up with bore), light primer strikes, double action triggers not cycling... Colt fixed them, but for a revolver that cost nearly $1800, it was a schmashmortion... mostly cuz Colt isn't 1/100th the company it was in the 1970s.

My favorite was the guy testing it, firing double-action, one bang, and then the hammer dropping, over and over on the same cylinder, click click click, then bang as the hand made correct contact.
I think it ended up being screws not tightened enough so things weren't lining up inside.

With my luck, it'd be off just enough to strike the primer but still shave off some copper/lead at the forcing cone. Having said that, I've never owned a revolver, so a certain amount of ass-talking could be in play here on my part.
