We adopted her about 11 years ago for mice control. I believe she was about 15 when she died Wednesday night. I didn't even like cats and she changed my mind. The guilt is killing me. I keep trying to remind myself we gave her a great life and it was an accident but it still fucking sucks. I'm sorry Nina and I will miss and love you forever.

We all love our pets despite cultural and and socioeconomic differences. Most of you helped me remember that today and I am gracious for that.
Nina was adopted from living in a 2×2' cage at a shelter. We needed a mouser both inside AND outside. She preferred to spend most her time outdoors and we provided safety, love and shelter. Anyone who wants to use her memorial post to promote only indoor cat living as an excuse for her death can fuck off. I was an accident. She wasn't that kind of cat and I'm glad I gave her the life she wanted and deserved.

I am so, so very sorry. You did give Nina a great life, and she knew you would never hurt her on purpose. I've had close to the same thing happen and still feel pangs of guilt 35 years later. For us, kitty ran out to greet us and ran right under the wheels of the car.

Awww, it's ok @Snuggelapolous.... we do everything we can for our little buddies, and we give them a good life.... It's statistically inevitable that accidents happen.... If I was your cat, I would forgive you, and say go try again with one of the new babies out there that needs love.... they'll take care of you.

My ex’s dad was walking down the stairs at night and stepped on a kitten the family had just got. The poor guy is still haunted by that.

My wife stepped on our (adult) black cat in the night on the stairs once, full on step, all her weight. He was fine, just breathed funny for a few days. She still thinks about it. If he'd died... I don't even know. That's awful.

Omfg I would never be the same. I once prematurely killed my goldfish by changing the water too much… and I’m still emotionally scarred. That happened in my 20s.

You gave her 11 years of love, my friend. It does suck, it will suck for a while and it might hurt for a long while. But you should remember the positives, try to forgive yourself, and know that 11 years of love count for a whole lot more than one accident.

When I was a kid(8), I killed a kitten by accident. I was playing on the folding bed couch, lifting the bed up and down out of pure boredom. I let the bed fall and the bed leg crushed the kitten neck. I still get nightmares about it from time to time, even now.

I am so sorry. You need to find some inner peace and forgive yourself. Dont tell yourself there were 1000 things you could do. Because, while technically true... thats just not how life works. I have accidentally killed 2 cats in my life. 1 was a kitten. I was only 5 years old. I was tossing it up in the air cause I was a dumb kid and it landed on its nose. 2nd, I was a teenager, cautiously backing out of my garage and I have no idea how or why the cat didnt move out of the way. It just sucks.

If it's practically possible, it's best to keep your cats inside. There's a lot of psychos in the world that would try to run over a cat on purpose. Plus if people dump chemicals outside it can poison them. The number of cats killed by coyotes and other animals is high in some places too.

Had someone purposely run over one of my cats about 30 years ago. My brother had his cat poisoned with anti freeze by someone on his street. We both now keep our cats safely indoors. You're right, there's some nasty people out there.

I have any indoor kitty that's very healthy at around 14-15 years old. We also feed a few stray kitties that someone abandon. I'd love to adopt them and take them indoors but they don't get along with my cat.

Mine are ten and six years old. Never been sick or had any problems, and I never have to worry where they are. My ten year old is in my arms as I type this. There are a lot of strays here, too, and I hear them fighting and screeching all the time. It's awful, but if they can't get along out there, all hell would break loose in here.

No one came to help me, I was too short and I pushed the wall a little too much trying to reach over
It wasn't heavy relative to me, but it did crush Diablo, he didn't die immediately and oh boy do I still feel bad 22 years later

Im so sorry sweetheart. Try not to be too hard on your self like you said you know it was an accident. She looked so happy so you know she had a good life. Look after yourself the grief will hurt for a while. I coming up to 10 years since my babies died in June/July next year and I still wonder if they had a good life and that I did enough. Again I’m sorry for your loss.

This is how I chose my cat. Saw what I though was an empty mostly ignored kennel (was a short kid) and jumped up to make sure. Saw him curled up in the back corner. Pretty much only took a quick glance at the rest after I spotted him, as I had already decided. Trust your gut. If it's just pity, then maybe sleep on it first.

fellow cat collector I see. I like to look for the cats that prob will make people rethink adopting. So far I've gotten an amazing baby recently. Shes kitten sized but also adult like with the biggest heart and personality possible. She just needed a bit of TLC and a good home.

Hey! A similar thing happened to me. Not a pet, though. My boyfriend and I were cleaning out an outdoor storage closet, and I was trying to move a heavy shelf unit... I lifted it, a mouse ran out, and I let go... we'll, the mouse only made it halfway out, so when I let the shelf fall, it crushed it in the middle of its back. Wow. I threw up immediately and felt like an asshole. I still feel bad when I think about that little mouse.

At least it was a quick death; plus, mice usually meet their end by being food for something bigger, like a snake, owl, or cat, so that mouse was actually lucky to have met its end quickly. I know this sounds weird, but I used to work in healthcare, and watching people take years to slowly, painfully die was so difficult, and now I take comfort in knowing when a person or thing dies quickly.

Something similar happened to a cat I had when I was a kid. My older sister and her then boyfriend were trying to get her out from under her bed and out of the room and dropped the bed on her. I was at school and came home to the news.

Oh my cat has jumped in my front loader AND in the dishwasher. I have a No Kitties In The Kitchen or laundry room rule bc there are so many ways to get hurt. Plus my cat is black and barely visible in the hamper full of darks
