I'd like to think that Dr. Ian Malcolm was the in-universe A-list pop culture scientist. Sort of like having your flashy new aquarium endorsed by Carl Sagan or Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
Sure, his field of expertise isn't really related, but by the general public, he's seen as "schmott guy" who can be trusted (also, his sexy look would look REAlly good on the PR photos).
