I'm a CS professor. I love teaching programming. So I made a game about it.

I think game-based learning is a great way to learn and practice programming. So I'm developing a programming puzzle game where you use Python to solve many different programming challenges. Is this something you'd be interested in? What do you think of this trailer?

[Edit] Wow thank you for your interest. Here is a link to the steam page. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2216770/JOY_OF_PROGRAMMING__Software_Engineering_Simulator/

[Edit2] And no, sadly I'm not a counter-strike professor :( yet!

When I was a kid we learned dos by programming a lil turtle on the screen to move around

WC3 world editor introduced me to basic programing. The game aspect of it all hooked me hard.

If the conveyor belt has multiple items wouldn’t the door close after only one was received? Lol but legit I love this idea! I wanna play

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have wanted to learn python for close to a decade now. This is the way.

As a Software Engineer myself: Added to my wishlist :)

If the puzzle involves "blocks" of syntax, then this is a great way to learn syntax. Is programming logic involved in the puzzle?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, you solve each puzzle with real Python code.

As a technical Product Owner, I've always wanted to learn programming. Just for funsies. I'd absolutely buy this. :D

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can it be adapted to other languages? I have been wanting to learn Rust or C++ for embedded apps

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually yes. The game has an open API and you could use any programming language to connect to it. But my first focus is Python.

great idea!

I'm so spoiled, that I was wondering since when there are Counter Strike professors?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck yeah I'd be into it

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is a wonderful idea and a great approach towards learning to code… I commend you!!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What this is amazing! I taught CS at the middle school level and learned myself as I went along and man this would have been amazing to have

I'm very much interested in the opinions of other teachers. I'm planning a play test if you want: http://prof-scherer.de/joy-of-programming/

Love games like this, especially when they use a real-world programming or scripting language. Looking forward to its release!

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Cheers. That was also one motivation for me to allow practicing Python in fun, semi-realistic environments.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yes please. I think this would help my caveman brain understand it better. If you have any good resources I'd be interested

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

if I didn't loathe programming, I'd def check it out. good luck to you on this endeavor

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Thank you, hope you will!

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

This is awesome! And it solves my most fundamental problem: hard for me to learn because it's not fun yet, doesn't keep my attention

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Added to my wishlist. I've been learning python here and there but not anything significant, this looks great

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

nice! Almost as educational as building home automation in python & learning my script does a DoS on my phone when my smoke alarm goes off

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I plan to include an entire category about home automation within the game as well.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

dude I've literally been looking so hard for this exact thing it feels like a targeted ad.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cool.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This seems really cool. I know nothing about programming, and this intrigues me. Wishlisted.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ive been meaning to learn python. This seems like a cool way. Might give it a look

I don't need to learn coding for my job, and I'm too old and dumb to take this up as a hobby, but I would definitely get this for my kids.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Great idea, @OP. Good luck.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thank you very much. This is the very first time I'm talking about the game in public, so these reactions are very encouraging.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I love these games! There are some mobile ones that are great, namely 7 billion humans. I would play yours as soon as possible.

This is a great idea. I’m interested in trying it out.

Same

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me as well. Such a good idea. I’m going to share this at my engineering facility as well.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Wow thank, that is awfully nice of you. This game actually started out as tool I used in-class to showcase some programming concepts.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Thank you, I'm actually planning a playtest soon. If you are interested here is more info: https://prof-scherer.de/joy-of-programming/

Thanks. I’ll check it out.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You should look into the Kano. It uses gamification with programming. Building structures in minecraft using python loops etc.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I’ll look into this as well. It’ll be a good incentive to get my kids coding.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

https://kano.tech/us They sell a Rasp Pi kit..but you can get the Linux image free and run in a virtual environment

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thanks for the tip, will check it out. I actually plan to implement some block placing levels as well, so this might be very useful.

Can i make happy little accidents?

3 years ago | Likes 195 Dislikes 1

You don't need to make one if you are one

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Little Bobby Dicts we call him.

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

It's the definition of programming

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I accidently fixed 4 bugs today. Coding is weird...

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I accidentally added more than that. I'm excited what they will turn out to be.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I like to call them "unintentionally features"

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

this is how WWIV started.. lets not repeat the future past!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Programming is 90% happy little accidents

3 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 1

you spelled crappy wrong

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The other 10% is angry little accidents.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And the other 70% is intentional.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and 10% bugs?

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

AKA unhappy accidents.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Also 90% bugs.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

This equals to 190% which is a bug.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Put it into a boolean variable?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Clearly the bug percent calculator has some bugs.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only if you consider bugs and happy accidents to be 2 separate states of code, I consider them to be the same pile.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

No, just an undocumentet feature
