Me: Don't say anything about the chessboard. It's just a comic.
Also me: They are both playing as white, and the board is facing the wrong direction. They should each have a white square on the bottom right.
Me: They're animals! It's amazing they can play at all!
Also me: It's not the animals that bother me, it's the artist!

If the artist drew the black pieces they would blend into the chessboard. White pieces with a black outline are easier to see. I’m sure the artist only had limited space so a chessboard of off dimensions is what we get.
Relax people. It’s great you observe these mistakes, but some are for the benefit of the reader and others are limitations of the art form. It’s just a comic and it is a comic.

It’s also a 6x8 board. Incidentally, they never actually say explicitly that they are playing Chess, so maybe it’s all consistent!
