Is there a keyboard shortcut for the snowball?

That is the best type of competition

I don't think our tribalism is a net benefit in the modern world.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

the gap was never more than about 2000 points for the first ~5million+ votes. they only let it get larger because it was just too f'n obvious before

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I still don't understand the snowballs. Is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing? I missed the memo

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I got thrown into this fight. My team was losing and now winning. I didn't even do anything but still winning. You're welcome team pinecone.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait hold on. We're losing now. Ignore my comment.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope, you are winning now... because its been a few hours so now its Pinecones turn to be winning, because thats how the game was programed.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if anything it's so imgur can advertise artificial engagement numbers

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

To be fair, I wasn't on Imgur much yesterday.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Of course it's fake. The losing team would be demotivated and their score would tank, demotivating them even further.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's why is many game(show)s next rounds award more points so can still win, even when behind.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That sounds like something an acorn lover would say. #team_pinecone

No guys cmon be real. These taps on my phone have meaning!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck you, have some snowballs

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was assigned team Acorn and I just, genuinely don't care. I wasn't even given the option to opt into it, so why pretend to be invested in something I had no choice in being arbitrarily assigned to?

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

This…but say it about race and gender.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Forced enthusiasm is exhausting. It's okay to acknowledge the lack of autonomy and not fake excitement. Maybe express your concerns to the assigner and see if there's room for change or compromise?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Here from the phone app, I don't have snowball to throw, and I don't know which team I'm in neither

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fake engagement? Nah, I'm just really passionate about arbitrary team assignments

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When will it be over?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah let's do a test and only team pinecone place votes for the next 72 hours. Let's see if that changes the number. We need verifiable results.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It wouldn’t be verifiable because you couldn’t get everyone on team acorn to agree.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hey! Come on, acorns (felt the comma was necessary)! Lets be honest, now. M'kay? Let the pinecones win. For science.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah but I think I got a trophy, so maybe I got that going for me.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am old enough to remember when Imgur was for funny memes. Now it’s a political echo chamber that caters to advertisers over users.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

You see ads? Firefox and AdBlocker = No Ads

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m on my phone

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

My team is winning

Seems to be a bit of a confusion between the numbers at the top and the numbers that it's showing me.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

100% simulated data

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...so, I've been throwing pinecones at people on the street for nothing ?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't have any snowballs to click

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Yeah, I have no idea what everybody is on about. I'm guessing it's a desktop-only thing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Sadness

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I call it delightful cluelessness.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hahaha

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope, mobile, new icon in like/dislike toolbar at the bottom.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not on mine

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Update you app?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope! None of the above. Android issue perhaps. Anyway, I aint pissed about it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Still annoyed I can’t trade in my points for something. Almost 800k and nothing to show for it :/

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

There is a prize for the top 50 people or something, I didn't really pay much attention but there is a post explaining there is actually a prize in the form of the accolades thingy. Looks like most people didn't see that post

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Im def not in the top 50. But do you know where this post lives?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It appears if you tap the imgur logo on the app. So it's for top 50 + 50 more at random for the winning team and 25 for the top participants of the losing team "Fortify your Igloos for Imgur's Snowball Fight!" /gallery/Eq05W7f

You have eternal disdain.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't you get free emerald?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

But is it lifetime or just a month of it, they didn't specify lol

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I must have been assigned team acorn but I identify as a pinecone. I have a special affinity for pinecones. Can I change teams ?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is absolutely no way anybody actually gives a fuck about this anymore. First day was cute/fun, but now it's tedious shit. The front page posts have to be bots.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everyone in the comments is talking about how they aren't doing it and how its all BS... AND YET...

The numbers keep going up at the exact same rate, and the team in the lead keeps switching and going up by 10-20K every couple hours.

Almost like we aren't the ones throwing the snowballs or impacting the count.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that the points are totally BS. Earlier today Pinecones were 18k ahead and are now magically 5k behind

2 years ago | Likes 243 Dislikes 9

I think the best way to determine this is to have team Pinecone stop submitting any snowballs and we'll see what happens with the score.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I watched the upvotes on this post.

I would get 1 upvote, then a few seconds later 4 snowballs appeared. 3 upvotes 12 snowballs.

It was a perfect 4-1 ratio until it hit 200 upvotes, with the snowballs lagging behind by 3-5 seconds... as much as a minute, but always catching up to the exact 4-1 ratio until 200-800 then it switched some upvotes would be 3 some would be 4. Like it was preprogramed.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Don't underestimate us acorns

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah totally bugged. If it was accurate pinecone never would have been ahead at all.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Really? I've seen pinecones trailing by a few thousand all day, since 9AM-ish CST

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I got Team Acorn and at no point has the thing said anything other than "Your team is on top!" forme.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Acorn is back in the lead, and i assume it's because people saw they were lagging behind and just started hauling. I know i did. Keep going Acorns, we're nuts!

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I mean, maybe, but it's also very possible that people from both teams are pushing the snow button at similar rates with one side getting ahead from a little while and then the other one, and the counter takes some time to update

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

That's incredibly wishful thinking. There's no way it's legitimately this balanced.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Rule of large numbers https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_large_numbers

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Very clearly doesn't apply here. I mean, seriously, just read the first sentence of that - none of those assumptions fit to this "game." Participation isn't random (or even pseudo random), it's not capped, it's not independent, and the scores represent a sum total - not averages. And that's before getting to the "Limitations" section which gives a bunch more reasons why it's not applicable.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

If you switch the view: every snow ball thrown is either from a pinecone or an acorn. The teams are randomly assigned and we have no reason to believe that the throws aren't mostly independent, hence we can assume that the scores are random and (mostly) independent. The scores represent a mean as well as a sum; the sum is just the total number of snow balls thrown.

The only assumption I think is doubtful, is the independence, but that is often accepted in reality when it's nearly independent.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Front page posts garner a couple of hundred likes so (200 likes x 5 snowballs x 50% participation) + 250 tossed balls of people that didn't like the post but still tossed them balls is about ~750k balls a post? Depending on the number of "rando" team members and the posts, coupled with how many posts are created in usersub per hour we can safely deduce that pete silvia is creating this chaos but for what reason?

2 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 2

Pepe.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I can't believe Pete would do this

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

CAN I TALK TO YA ABOUT THE MAIL?!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I theory is while the snowballs are tallied, they get randomly assigned to a team regardless of who is throwing them to keep the scores close and seemingly competitive to encourage engagement

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Much easier to write the code for that too!
