More than you think, I imagine.
Plenty of people have some sort of 'open plan' home where the natural dividing place to put the couch is quite a way from the wall. Our downstairs is 30' across and we're currently seated 12' from the TV (couch splits the room functionally between living and kitchen/dining). Upstairs we have a small loft/wide hallway/thing, and it's 9' from seated position to where a TV would go (eg: a 66' TV is 'the optimal size' for that distance)

OK, I'll bite - do the research and bring the math back for you.
An average studio apartment in the US and Canada is 12-16 feet wide 28-38 feet deep, and about 460 square feet. A 'narrow and long' pad (12' wide) with the TV on one wall and a couch against the other wants a 70" TV for "optimal viewing". 16' wall to wall (e.g. 13'6 couch to TV) wants...ONE HUNDRED INCHES.
