n Homer's Odyssey, it took Odysseus 10 years to return to his island kingdom of Ithaca from the ruins of Troy. Most of this delay, however, wasn't due to the physical distance. A direct sail across the Aegean Sea would normally only take about a week, but Odysseus's journey was famously plagued by divine obstacles (like angering Poseidon), curses, monstrous encounters (like the Cyclops), and long detours (spending 7 years stranded on Calypso's island).
also, in the film the travel get completed. Moses had to die of thrist and hunger while watching his friend enter in the holy land because he was too weak to break a stone with a single hit. And that angered Yahweh (aka the asshole).
he had to break a stone so water could flow and his people could drink. He didnt manage on the first try and had to die like a dog cuz "My lord told me to hit the stone once. I hit it twice so I didnt have faith in my lord. For this I cant to set foot in the holy land". Of course, it could have been an excuse because after 40 years circling about 100 miles of desert he couldnt endure his wife anymore. Yeah I wrote wife, not life. She DID enter in the holy land without looking back, after all.
Remember, seven years of that trip was spent on Calypso's island, hanging out there with a literal goddess who was madly in love with him and promising to give him eternal youth if he stuck around. Not saying whether that's a good or bad thing, but no wonder it took Odysseus so long to get home lmao
Maybe it’s a group of ADHD people? Also consider the release of consoles and games during that time. Gotta have downtime for Pirates of the Mediterranean Sea!
I mean the actual distance between ancient Troy and Ithaca is only about twice that. Three to four times if you account for having to sail around Greece.
And a triremes can go about 2-3 times walking speed. It really was about all the shit that got in the way of making that journey when it came to how long it was.
I am the opposite. I probably have some toxic masculinity in me, but not for this. I will go out of my way to ask for directions if it means I don't have to use a fuckin phone or map. I'll aim for the old locals everytime. Saved so much stress and time. I recommend it.
Umm did you miss the part where they took a boat and there's no body of water connecting these places? How hard do you think it is to sail a boat without any water? THINK!
Bro I was going to go searching for this and show off how hip and trendy I was and you come along and just drop this with a great comment as well. Kudos to you sir. Kudos.
Wow, how could you possibly believe that the Earth is a tetrahedron? The Earth is very obviously a dodecahedron. Because each day is two sets of 12 hours. And a dodecahedron has 12 sides. Half when the sun is up, half when the sun is down. That's what time zones are, dodecahedrons of clock splitting!
(I do love the return argument of: “If the earth DID have an edge, it would already be monetized. PLUS these billionaires in space ships would be ‘revealing the truth’.
OsirisX1
No one tell this guy about the “escape from Egypt”. Took 40 years to go a four hundred miles.

well fuck, I think it would take me that long too if I had to use a boat.
Arenlor
I mean, he was using a boat.
MarcUK
Side quests are a bitch! xD
azazyel
You ever tried to sail a boar on a freeway?
PatrickDenStore
Well, it took Moses and friends 40 years to travel 400 miles so they were a bit quicker than that guy.
ignotoCiResto

Wasn't it because he doubted and hit the stone twice? Still an asshole move by Yahweh.

Hah. Try with California traffic… /s

You had a whole new (almost) free land to colonize and half of your cities have the name of other cities built before…

Sounds like someone hasn't visited New York.

I lived in Ithaca for a while. It wasn't uncommon for snow to be a full meter deep, making a 10-year trek believable.
SleazyBijou
A trip through southern tier will do that to you

I remember reading this in highschool and it literally being the only assigned reading that I generally enjoyed

2 hr 52 min.
bob72012412
So New York is now using the metric system?
Condor3615
From what I understand, with New York traffic, it DOES take that long.
OdinYggd
No, it doesn't. The pictured route is across a rural area of Upstate NY. Hills, forests, rivers, and a nice interstate system.
AdmiralButtStuff
To be fair to Odysseus, he does spend 7 years in one place.
Grimmrog
fucking wild. literally

This is a really good video on what might have happened , makes sense to me https://youtu.be/XkytHmUNTLo?si=inFUnffTD0gtg_2B

and used a boat; how long does that route take by boat?
mikeatike
The Erie Canal doesnt go there
Bobbobbobobbananafanafobob
Didn't he also spend a full year with Circe, an actual witch, just so he didn't get turned into a pig?
AdmiralButtStuff
He did that too. Then it was 7 years with Calypso. So, in a way, he only fucked up so bad he turned a 2 week trip into a 2 year trip.
Stefnos87
He didnt want to ask for directions.
HighLordRegentofChaos
But he did ask for directions, from a dead prophet in Hades.
ImmaCatImmaSexyCat
Men would rather plug their ears with wax and tie themselves to a mast than stop and ask the nice bird ladies for directions.

You do know they were traveling via ship. Dragging it over the hard ground, replacing pieces as they wear out and all that takes time.
samanthadlcruz
They had to dig a canal that entire distance
SpikesGuns
Plus they kinda had a pissed off god working against them. Kinda stacks the odds against them
Beartornado
Perhaps the original Odyssey was just the first road trip type story

It does spend a lot of time on the friends he makes along the way

The original compulsive side-quester.

Named after the only person to come back after 20 years... from 600 men to 1
sombradeamigo1742
Yes I know how road trips work!
somethingnotyettaken
Now I'm picturing the movie version as "GreekTrip" starring Tom Green. Thanks for that.
sombradeamigo1742
Umm did you miss the part where they took a boat and there's no body of water connecting these places? How hard do you think it is to sail a boat without any water? THINK!
OdinYggd
Actually there is. Ithaca is on a lake, and if you sail to the north you reach the Erie Canal. Whuch would get you pretty close to Troy.
joepineapplesindrag
Dude the aussies do this every year i think
southflhitnrun
Now, I totally want to see an ancient Greek maritime battle but all the boats look like this. lmao!
MrStealYourGiF
I feel like they could have portaged the boat all round the edge in 6 months or less.
ButtscratchMcPherson
There's canals.
foxpotate
Sail a boat in no water? Its been done twice. Its a pain in the dick but it can be done. However... 1/2
foxpotate
2/2 that looks pretty fucking connected to me.

bippityboppitybuttsex
They didn't have cars... duh.
torquemada90
doesn't the Amtrak go that route?
bippityboppitybuttsex
There is a route North of there that follows I90 (sorta)... between Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse-Rome-Schenectady-Albany
unluckyandbored
He also made quite a few stops along the way..and got lost numerous times, IIRC.

There is a joke: "Why did Odysseus take 10 years? Have you seen a man ask for the way before?"

Well, taking the bus would be almost as fast.
FeralAV
They didn't have those either.

Try doing it with boats, tho

You can fool me. That's not real. -People who believe the earth is flat and the moon landing is fake.

I mean, yeah. Of course it's fake. It's just the backside of the sun.

Earth is a tetrahedron, and the moon landing was an inside job.
