Sometimes context matters

This was posted in a Facebook group dedicated to history and somebody said that they found this and we're wondering if anybody had any information.

Because it's Facebook 99% of the comments were from people who had opinions based on their lack of information. Those opinions were pretty evenly split between the far right praising their assumed (but completely wrong) ideas about what this was and the left attacking it for the exact same assumptions.

Volunteers of America: an organization aimed at finding housing for homeless, providing daycare for low income families, helping the poor find jobs or find better job, and basically trying to make life better for the poorest in our country.

100 Percent American, an essay by Ralph Linton
This essay attacks the popular idea at the time called 100% American that basically mirrors the political ideas behind our current "Made In America" stickers.
The essay points out that very little is actually 100% American - either it was invented in another country and we copy it here or we buy the pieces from another country and put it together here (which is exactly what reputable companies do for products labeled "Made in America" - the unreputable just put the sticker on there even if it was fully manufactured outside the country... like Trump campaign products).

Linton's essay was an attack on the American superiority complex by pointing out all of the ways that we benefit from different cultures and different races.

TlDr: this is a pin from an organization that thinks everyone has value regardless of their economic status highlighting an essay that says the more cultures we are exposed to the better off we are.
