I shred my lettuce then dress it with an Italian vinaigrette. Also it’s worth patting down your veggies, at the very least your tomatoes, and seasoning with salt and pepper.

Especially very wet veggies like pickle slices, give those bread-soggyfying bastards a good drying please

Years ago I found that sandwiches are only truly great when one of the condiments is butter. I am not saying butter then toasted. I mean butter as a literal condiment. Like Ham & Cheese sandwiches are not made with mayo but butter.

pat down? are they carrying weapons?

I assessed the tomato and started with an ocular pat down. It's clear. I cleared it.

No...you should be petting your vegetables!

@op Take your lettuce, and cut it into small pieces. Throw that in a bowl. Add a VERY small amount of oil, vinegar. Then salt and pepper it. Mix it with your hands while gently crushing it a bit. That will definitely up your sandwich game.

That's definitely a good tip, but they do say "I shred my lettuce then dress it with an Italian vinaigrette" in the text. Still, good call. Ethan Chlebowski has a great video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rmrZZj1Hjs ) about why deli sandwiches taste can better than home made, and this is one of his great suggestions. I also think that adding a garlic spread like toum really elevates the whole proceedings, but not everyone is as into garlic as I am.

Is this different from putting such seasoning elsewhere on the sandwich, or using a salty meat?

Yes placement does change the taste somehow. I recently discovered cracked Pepper on Tomatoes! I see the good sub places do this now that I’m paying attention.
Pepper anywhere else in the sandwich not the same, it somehow brings out the flavor of the tomato when directly on it.
