Wasn't lit by the arrow. They found the chance of hitting the audience too high. It purposefully overshot into a sandbox.

The target was actually the gas cloud above the torch. Arrow passed through flammable gas, poof! It landed outside just as planned.

The arrow was supposed to go over it. It only had to pass through the gas cloud coming off the top, and landed in a sandbox outside.
