I may have to start watching this.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Got to 3rd ep, couldn't handle the whole musical thing anymore. Never looked back. Too bad, as an oriental I would've enjoyed it I think

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some of the songs are bad but some of them are pretty funny and unexpected. I loved the irish song about alcoholism.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you don't like the songs, I think it'd get grating pretty quick.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isnt calling somone oriental like calling somone european exept they are of oriental decent not european?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Things are oriental, people are not. Its an outdated word used by people who sailed around naming things that already had names.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

No, oriental literally just means "the east". It is still used in the UK.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So, thats the name in our language, if the native populous has its own name in its own langauge the good for them. We gonna say calling 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

2/2 somone German or Greek is offencive too? People need to get a grip, its the english language and thats the word we have.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Actually the word we have is 'Asian'. Or 'East-Asian', if you want to be specific. "Oriental" is a word with a lot of baggage and history.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oriental is a lot more specific to china, japan and the Koreas, eas asian could be anywhere between china and indonesia really.

Literally in the post description.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

I'm stupid I'm sorry

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But the show isn't called father brah, I googled it and it's called crazy ex-girlfriend.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Description, not the title. The show name is under all the images

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ah, fair enough, didn't see that on mobile

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

the premise seems a little off-putting

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I feel it's pretty nuanced.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it suffers from the title. I know I avoided it for a bit because of the name.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I haven't seen a single trailer or preview of the show/episode that has changed that perception...if it was Crazy Ex-Boyfriend...shitstorm

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think them breaking into song and dance every other scene is what it suffers from. But I like it otherwise.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me too! And also because the thumbnail on Netflix looks dumb.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's wrong with the word oriental?

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 9

Nothing. People are just overly sensitive pussies now. I'm Jewish and idgaf when someone calls me a Jew.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

My wife is Chinese and she uses Oriental... literally never heard of this, neither of us have.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm in Asia right now. And I see occidental everywhere.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Things are Oriental, not people.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Not everywhere. In the UK we still occasionally use it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Food and rugs are oriental. Apparently, people aren't.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

Huh? That isn't quite true.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Which is dumb... Because I think that word sounds awesome and exotic!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 11

It is not necessarily majorly offensive, but it's outmoded. Like calling people Chinamen, or referring to "colored folk." Old peeps do it.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

But it's their term? They're oriental and we're oxidental

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

Whose term? You're saying "Orient" comes from... Orientals? Surely you are disoriented.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

That guy needs reorientation

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe he just mixed up his phrasing. You know, not on purpose, but by occident.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

What if your like a surfer and some asks where Hong Kong is.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My grandma had an old beat up suitcase my mom wanted her to throw out. She wanted to donate it bc "the darkies would love this!"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Colored folk" is just wrong. It's "coloured folk".

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Redcoats. Next you'll be telling us to nix the "s" in "backwards," or put e's and o's in "Airplane." Madness.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Okay, you can have "airplane", but at the very least, you have to change your "math" to "maths". Meet us half-way here.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

But we forgot about all the other maths, we just have one in our country now.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's like the word Negro. Was acceptable once, no longer is.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 5

Oh, like "republican".

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That means black, and is more accurate in more cases than African American, as the person may be neither of those.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only in the US, btw. Had this whole discussion when working on a game. US can't understand it's not offensive in Canada, UK or France.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Eh, Negro is still borderline acceptable. It's the other version that'll get the shit beaten out of you.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

It's not anywhere near Negro. It's very much like Black. A proper, descriptive term anywhere but the US.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Negro was the proper descriptive term everywhere till the US changed it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

A lot of people use black in the US. Including those that are black.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its fine in the UK, just means from the east, most Chinese restaurants have the word in their name.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

I am shocked, shocked and appalled, to hear the Chinese Restaurants in the UK almost all incorporate the word 'negro' in their name.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oriental is only used for the Express, Food, and Rugs.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

You guys do you, but i don't see the point in demonising a valid and useful word unnecessarily.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

Eh, it's like calling white people just "whites." Sure its not necessarily wrong, but after a while people will get upset.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's like calling a Scot or Northern Irish "English". Yeah they are under the UK...but they aren't happy about it sometimes.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

if someone calls you oriental you call them occidental. It is just old words for east and west.

9 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 3

Grandpa called a guy a chinamen once. Not his face thank god.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

"Oriental" is fairly common in the UK as denoting East or South-East Asians: China, Japan, Vietnam, etc.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Whilst the US uses "Asian" for those places, in the UK "Asian" tend to be more Southern Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

is it? I've heard Asian used to refer to Pacific Asian people and "South Asian" for the south

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And what do you do if your parents called you accidental?

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I once worked with a guy who was told by his father "You weren't an accident - you were a mistake."

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Brutal

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think Oriental usually refers to objects, like carpets or vases

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

Or food, yes. Oriental = style of thing, Asian = People from that sector of the world.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Thank you so much!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No prob, DrugPoultry. I was born over there, and had to get it right from a young age. :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My parents say "Oriental" still. I"m like hey, it's not 1960 anymore. Get a grip! Mom says "oh sorry, "AAAASIAN""

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's Eurocentric, so people take it as offensive

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

why?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Why is it Eurocentric or why woukd people be offended?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How is it Eurocentric? Old maps used to have east at the top, so they were "oriented" eastward.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You have the etymology backwards. Orient comes from the Old French orient ("east)from Latin orientem (nominative oriens) "the rising sun [1]

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"to take one's bearings," literally "to face the east". So to call Asia The Orient, being east of Europe, puts Europe as the focal point [3]

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

the east, part of the sky where the sun rises," originally "rising". The verb form, to arrange facing east," from French s'orienter [2]
