My favorite was the "curved checkerboard into the distance" if you dray a straight line from the highest Y point to the smallest X and then keep progressing until you've connected the highest X to lowest Y. Now color in every other block.
Top left light source would be consistent with shade on that face, and let's say the wall opposite reflects a portion of that light because white surface. Thus light shading. Pay no attention to the stairs subject to the same reflection.
