About 5 years ago I watched it with a kid who'd recently graduated from a small northeastern college and he understood the satire and thought it was funny but also commented "that's so racist" at the end of it. I assume he meant that the satire was itself coming from a place of unconsciously racist privilege, or something. I didn't ask.

So, my nephews and nieces just watched Blazing Saddles, they thought it was fucking hilarious... (they are 16, 17 and 19...)... TBH, I had just had them watch Get Smart and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World... and they are well-versed in satire.
The whole purpose of Blazing Saddles (and Tom Sawyer) is to make fun of racists and they both do a beautiful job.

the widespread glorification of cowboys was the most prominent. It was the nail in the coffin of a previous heyday of uncritical cowboys movies. But it also was one of many little steps in making the KKK into a laughingstock.

A cowboy movie here are there I'm all for. But we went through a period of cowboy movies being essentially the Marvel craze of the day, and seriously saturating our culture with nostalgia for the colonial expansion into Indian American territories and a solid amount of other casual racism. Those films were already in some decline, but Blazing Saddles helped snap people out of the nostalgia haze and be able to think of this shit a bit more critically.
