Glanum
This picture was taken near the entrance to Glanum, France. Where the Celtics built a fortified city which was influenced by Greek merchants and later renovated by the Romans after they had taken over the place. This was because there was a sacret spring which was said to contain healing powers (but has since been reduced to a green puddle in which ducks and fish swim) and it was strategically built on the flanks of a gorgeous mountain range (As far as there are mountains in the Provence).
Van Gogh actually painted his 'Starry Night', and many other paintings, here, because he liked the place so much. He had the time to do so because he was staying at an insane asylum, so that must have been nice.
Tl;dr Nice place, huh?
Edit: I made an album with pictures of my time in Glanum, so for those interested, go check that out! http://imgur.com/a/C2oHF
This is the building of which you could see only the top in the first picture. This was actually some sort of memorial for two of Glanums citizens, which was made by, of course, the narcissistic bastards themselves.
In the Tollus (the round little thing on top) there are two statues that probably resemble the two men.
A close up of the relief on the memorial stone
This was the gate through which one could enter Glanum
The inside of the gate's arch is decorated with coffers.
Another nice picture :)
A little model depicting what Glanum must have looked like. All those little buildings are the holy part with all the temples and the sacret spring. The larger buildings were mostly living quarters
A reconstruction
What Glanum looks like from above
P.S. Sorry for the angle..
Another picture of Glanum from above.
The lower parts of the temples have flooded now. People seemed to have thought this to be a great place to dump their fish: several were swimming all over the place, even though it is unfortunately not visible here.. Of course we liked this part best.
The path leading towards the site
Walls of more houses
Some sort of decoration
A column standing in one of the houses
The sacred spring! Finally!
I apologize for the bad quality and tilting of my pictures, but all these were taken with a phone while running after an overenthusiastic teacher.
