Eroticism was an integral part of Roman life, and sexuality was often discussed openly and represented in art. The Romans engaged in practices that today might be considered sexual perversions, yet they did not perceive them as such. These behaviors were approached with remarkable openness and apparent innocence. The erotic scenes of Pompeii are not found only in the brothels but also in private houses and public spaces, such as the suburban baths, which were frequented by both men and women. The modern concept of obscenity did not exist in Roman society in the same way it does today.
