Want a husky? Make sure you can handle this.

EDIT - Our husky family thank you for your support! Wanted to share this with new pet owners since since we are seeing more empty shelters. We welcome any questions you may have. A quick list of some common questions:

What brush? - The Furminator ? You even see the static when brushing.

How often is this shedding? - All huskies are a bit different. Ours is year-round, some months less than others. Depends on season + weather.

Why an apartment? - Went from apt to house to apt because of work. Our huskies are always first thought when rearranging life.

How come doing this inside? - At our house, we would do it outside in our backyard. Since in apt, we considered that not all neighbors would understand and as friendly as the imgur community! Everywhere else is closed.

Friday and Pepper says Hi to all!

aww

We used to be able to brush an entire second dog's worth off of our Great Pyrenees

I got poodles. They have one coat and it’s hair. Almost identical to humans only they don’t shed as much as we do. No shedders ever again.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah yes. I have a Australian Shepherd. He only sheds twice a year though. 6 months at a time, however.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I plucked my husky. My OCD demanded it be done symmetrical.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to love brushing the down coat from my Husky.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same here!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's very satisfying!

Exact same as my dog. We do it outside. The birds love it for nests

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Fantastic! Now lets do it all over again tomorrow.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I want to see you gather it up and roll it into a ball

Yaaaaayyyy!! v

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think at that point I'd be getting one of those vacuums with the pet attachment

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There is a furminator (what op is using) that attaches to a vacuum.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You'll also burn your vacuum cleaner up. Went thru 3 of them when I had 2 American Eskimos. They (the dogs) were worth it.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hyperallergenic

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What brush? I got a beefy boi who needs a good brush.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm sure he will enjoy this

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+1 furminators are so good

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My allergies just flared up

6 years ago | Likes 838 Dislikes 0

You sure it's not COVID?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I covered my mouth/nose under my shirt just watching this

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't have any, but I feel them developing!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shit the allergies of my allergies flared up

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had to take Benadryl just from watching this.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My eyes just got real itchy and my throat needs a scratching

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Benadryl, it’s what’s for dinner!

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Can't sneeze if you're unconscious.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I slept in a Benadryl induced coma last night. It was wonderful.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm envious. Benadryl requires a prescription in my state and I haven't gone through the trouble of going to the doctor.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You sure you don't mean sudafed?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just sneezed out of my asshole.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Shart?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I hate you so much. I'm ugly laugh crying you bastard.

Finally, someone that understands

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

In case, bless you ?

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

The furminator

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

To a degree, too much can rip guard hairs. I have that and regular needle brush. My husky prefers the needle brush.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Boom

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They’re badass! We use a small one on our Pom.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh I need to know what type of brush you are using my dog is going to need it

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Here you go!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a wolf- Malamute mix. Welcome to my nightmare

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Must be a bit worst. I'm very interested in the wolf mixes

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably unpopular opinion: this is my favorite part about huskies. I like pulling out their pluckies haha. The loose fur.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It satisfies my OCD needs. My Malamutes usually prefer I take my meds.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not alone. I even do it when we take a walk. Somehow satisfying

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's a lot of fun to me to see how much fur I can get out of my livestock guardian breeds and see if I can create another dog out of fur.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now all you need is some glue and you can build another dog!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

one reason I'll never get a dog with long coat.. that would just freak me out, the never ending coat shedding.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

It's not coat length. It's the undercoat underneath the longer guard hairs. Source: long-time owner of double-coated dogs.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The length of the coat doesn’t necessarily correlate to the amount of shedding, btw!

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

That's very true, we had a rottie In the shelter that CONSTANTLY shed, more then my Maremma does, it's wild.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a Bolognese, they have long, one coat wavy hair that doesn't shed. It depends on the breed!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Year-round and given up on pet rollers. You can get used to it. For us, it's worth tolerating for their affection!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

oh I totally understand. once you get a dog, no matter what breed, you enjoy the affection. but my OCD & coat shedding won't go together.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not a long coat that sheds, it’s the double coat. Huskies, corgis, labradors, etc have two layers, and one sheds in the warmer months.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My corgi sheds year round though and gets matted up if I don’t use a furminator often.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oh ok. I'm good with one coat dogs then!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What brush do you use? I’ve been looking for something effective

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We've had this 4+ yrs and still going well. Recommend. v

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All three of my cats do this. And I'm allergic.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You're allergic and own 3 cats?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yep

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You’ve never loved something that hurts you ?

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Once too many

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh sure, but if you're allergic you know after 1 cat. Getting 2 more is just self punishment

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I’m allergic to my cats. Used to have dogs and was allergic to them too. They’re worth it for the companionship.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pile up all of the fur and you can build another dog!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That must feel so satisfying, man

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Achoo

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bless you

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that right there ended any desire to own a moon moon.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I used to do mine the birds would line the fences and it would all be gone in about 30 minutes.

6 years ago | Likes 460 Dislikes 0

We've got an American Akita, we leave his fur in the bird feeder so they can use it for nests.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Those are going to be some warm birds nest

6 years ago | Likes 135 Dislikes 0

I gave my little fluff a haircut this week & today I saw a bird leaving our feeder with a tuft of fluff scrap in his beak

6 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

Don’t want to be a downer, but please don’t share dog fur with birds if you treat with topical flea and tick meds. It can be toxic. ☹️

6 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

Would make sense. Though it is hard to stop all the birds from grabbing tufts of it if done outside.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

When I brush my cat she immediately attempts to eat it...

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

its like a bunch of dads lined up at home depot waiting for the lumber shipment to arrive so they can go build a deck

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

How's the husky doing in that apartment? Not every husky would take that well. Hope yours is good.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ours is doing well, even when we're not home. Apt is about 1000 SF, not too crowded for four. Took a few days to warm up to the apt.

Canine glitter. Confetti’s easier to clean up.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This would have been a better title post

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Why oh why are you doing that inside?!

6 years ago | Likes 1573 Dislikes 7

In the kitchen no less. Ugh.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Outside makes it pick up and stick to you all over, like your head and mouth (first hand experience)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was thinking this exactly

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get the shop vac

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol, you ever see a husky stand still outside after being cooped up?

6 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 0

I don't think i've seen a husky ever stand still unless it was asleep

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Even then..

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Our family had a white part Husky part German Shepherd. She stayed mainly in the basement and outside. Outside the blowing fur looked like>

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

> snow, and we were still finding clumps in the basement 20 years later.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not much more manageable outside. Wind blows it all over you and you have to get it off clothes or you chase it so neighbors aren't mad.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think after using the force dryer on mine my neighbors may hate me.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

In the kitchen no less...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Significantly less risk you'll need to chase a husky across town.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

When i groomed i called it snow

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Once gave my sheltie a bath in my kitchen sink. Then I blow dried him in same sink. Next day entire kitchen kitchen covered in tiny hairs

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Blow dry where hair doesnt matter. Not in kitchens

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Easier to clean up inside vs outside

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wondered if it was snowing outside? OP does explain above

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do it inside and then vacuum it up. It’s just easier and less mess.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Outside the slightest air current flies it into your eyes. You'll brush them outside too, though. You'll brush them everywhere.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You could probably spin that fit into yarn. When my cat eventually dies, I'm hoping I'll have saved up enough to knit some warm socks.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

*fur

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

IIRC there is a woman that actually does make husky/malamute yarn and knits it. Why not, right?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It would be nice to have my cat continue to keep me warm on cold nights after he's crossed the rainbow bridge. I love him so much.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

After my sis's chow/golden retriever had to be put down we had a moment of quiet driving back from the vet. I said, "he may be gone, but 1/?

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

he'll always be with us." My sis said, "oh yeah?" I said, "yeah, his fur is all over the fucking house." We learned how hard it is to 2/

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

laugh and cry at the same time.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I brush my dogs inside too. Outside the hair just sits there forever if you don't clean it up. Inside is easy to vacuum.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the only case where the clapping emoji between words is acceptable.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With that much hair it's better inside. Wind will spread that shit all over your yard and unless it rains it'll look like shit.

6 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 1

Itll be gone in no time tho. I do it with my dog. Granted, shes no Husky but still

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That's my point, with that much hair it just makes a bigger mess outside. Just do it inside away from carpet where you can sweep it up

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or the garage... or someone’s else place

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Birds will gather it for nesting. It really helps them.

6 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

I did not know this. +1 don't feel so bad about leaving hair in the yard now

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Birds did not pick up the majority of my dogs' hair. It sat rotting in between the grass for over a year lmao

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

"Yard" is a weird way to spell "Wal-Mart parking lot at midnight."

Or Tub next time? Lol. Beautiful husky ?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You wat clogged drains? Cause thats how you get clogged drains.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Umm i didnt say wash it down the drain. On dry tub, when finished its easy to pick up the hair

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A husky in am apartment was probably where you went wrong haha

6 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 3

On the bright side, your dog will stop shedding all over the place for at least a good 3 hours after that.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I wanna down vote the struggle but up vote your efforts.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Husky? Apt?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Collect hair and make fleece hat or slippers

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You could atleast tarp off the floor and some around it..we use to save it for our chickens to makes nests with

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Husky + apt? Bruh.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh man, a husky inside on an apartment? Good luck ...

I live in an apartment too and would honestly feel like a dick if I unleashed that amount of dog hair on the community

6 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

The nesting birds love it! Go to a park and groom your dog in the middle of the soccer field and nature will take care of the rest.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I sadly do not have a dog. Though I did give a squirrel a hand towel when he was stuffing his nest with garbage.
