Just saw a different post about the school system in the USA and like, ok, it was feel good but it left me feeling so sad. Happy this principal succeeded, but really sad his story is A Story. Suggestions on how to celebrate these things???

What you said is fine, but I'd flip it. "I'm sad you had to go through it, but so happy you succeeded." Maybe throw in a "I'm proud of you."
