It feels like very hard and dense wood

It COULD be petrified wood. But it has this wavy texture that makes me think it might rather be a sedimentary rock (fine layers of silt from the bottom of a lake, for example).
You would have to clean it and give us more more pictures. Size comparison, then some makro-shots, etc. And tell us where you found it.
