As a whole I generally believe police officers have the public's best interests at heart. Individually though, as a black male in America I understand that the cop who pulls me over could very well be the last cop I ever see. The reason I don't think assaulting an officer should be, for lack of a better term: a higher priority crime than assaulting a civilian is because police brutality is a very real thing and a big issue. If a police officer starts whaling on a civilian that they pulled over or someone they caught trying to shoplift (unarmed) to the point that that person's life is endangered, that person should be able to defend themselves. As things stand if you or I get pulled over and an officer decides we need a beating we will have no choice but to take it and hope that they either stop or their partner pulls them off of us before we end up in a coma, brain damaged, or dead. I want to clarify and say that I don't think assaulting an officer should be legal because it shouldn't. But I think we either have to start holding our police officers to a higher standard of accountability or say that if a cop goes off the rails and escalates a situation via violent assault that the recipient of said assault should be allowed to defend their life.
