all cables... Serial-usly?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

where the fuck is usb 3 type-c?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

in "one of the first things [OP] ever favourited"? Probably "in the future".

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Type C is also USB 3.1, not 3.0 as explicitly stated in the picture.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is a shameless plug

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

USB sounds like it's a good alternative to USA

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

United States of Beyonce YASSSSSS

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Is USB also compatible to USD like USA?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Universal Speed Assistance ?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If USB is Universal Serial Bus, USA must be Universal Serial Automobile.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I lol'd a little too loud. Woke my son up after reading this comment :p

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's funny since the full name of Brazil is the United States of Brazil.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about gender non-binary cables? Too much cis-cable shit

Fuck that reverse polarity shit. Those things are confusing as hell.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*raises hand* Is mayonnaise a cable?

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

No Patrick, mayonnaise use not a cable.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or Token ring.... did not have male or female connectors ..

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not only is your "ADAT" connector actually TOSLink, it's also S/PDIF. (S/PDIF is a protocol that can run over TOSLink or RCA+electrical)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's just Toslink. ADAT and S/DPIF are formats, Toslink is a cable/connector standard. Toslink can carry both, plus some consumer formats

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The chart differentiates between "S/PDIF-RCA" and "RCA" despite the connectors looking the same. I thought what I said would be more fitting

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And then there's Apple's bullshit.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Huh. Didn't know about USB-mini-4pin. Though for anyone obsessed with consistency, -TOSLINK not ADAT and 180° 5-pin DIN not MIDI.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

What language is this

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Techno-junkie.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nerd.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, S/PDIF is a format, rather than a connector. Can be carried over Toslink (optical) or RCA (coax).

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yup, same with MIDI.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Although I think S/PDIF is usually a different impedance (when using RCA) than video is... been a while though.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

..no SPDIF has nothing to do with impedance. You can use a normal rca cord for non optical spdif without any compromise in quality.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The S/PDIF specifications would disagree with you.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's digital so of course there won't be a compromise in quality - if it works. But S/PDIF is spec'd at 75 ohm on copper.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

thats the cable insulation impedance. nothing to do with the connector.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Speakon?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think you mean NL-4....

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Or NL-8? . . . Powercon?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

USB 2.0 Micro B Male on Samsung phones, never had such a problematic connector, the pins that hold it in place would always wear down..

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just had to replace a phone for that exact reason. Hurts so bad losing an otherwise pristine phone to not being able to charge it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had to change to LG, they have much sturdier usb cables and they still have the memory card and changeable battery, just as good!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

THANK YOU

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only five ppl saw that? Does no one know what a USB cable look like?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, that's why they have to introduce USB-C because people can't be arsed to learn.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why only have ADAT when you could have ADATS

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Totally would if this were a Canadian deck. (No idea if you play Wargame).

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No wired cable will beat a 20 pound payload of sd cards flying at you at mach 3. I did the math...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And it's 1.4 petabytes per second, ~6 times the estimated global IP data traffic rate in 2015.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sources: https://what-if.xkcd.com/31/ and ADATS: Mach 3+, Range 10km, Warhead 12.5kg (replaced by 12.5kg of SD cards)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never heard of an optical cable (TOSLINK) referred to as ADAT and according to Google nobody else has either.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's fairly common, especially in the pro audio industry. It's not correct, but a lot of people use it as such.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just like how that's not an XLR.... That's a XLR3. . . Not to be confused w/ XLR4, XLR5, etc...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But you still try to plug your USB key 3 times before succeeding aren't you ?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

USB 3X rule never fails!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's what USB Type C will eventually fix. (About damn time) It's tiny enough for any phone, has only one plug, and fits either way around.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Instructions unclear; connected my MIDI keyboard to my Commodore 64's serial bus

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

USB forgot that U meant Universal once. Next thing you know MTV will be playing music again.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Company: "we're making a new (insert small electronic device name)" USB: "IVE GOT A NEW PROPRIETARY PLUG FOR THAT!"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The "Universal" was always about "One port anything will plug into". USB Mini replaced a FOREST of proprietary cables when it was created.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now it's A/B/C standard/micro/mini male and female. Which mini cable was that you wanted?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As with any tech, they can't predict all future needs. At least they only need to fix each issue once for all future non-Apple devices.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How so? It's more universal than ever before. My MIDI keyboard doesn't even HAVE a MIDI port... just a built-in USB-MIDI bridge and USB port

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You mean 6 pin firewire. There's 4 and 9 too.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Coax is that cable BNC is the connector

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Or RCA or TS.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coax isn't a connector or a standard, it's a cable topology.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oo00oo0o You are on point. That is very true and you made me think. R00t

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you mean F type

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dont think I'll ever understand how my parents TV can get HD through the same cable & outlet that connected a TV there in 1981.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They can't

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Of course they can. Tvs can have tuners for HD over coax. But it's not protected the same as HDMI

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That's how Comcast does it. Sure looks like 1080p.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The same way that DSL internet service can travel over plain old telephone lines. Digital high frequency signal vs old analog. (1)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Coax cable is well suited to high-frequency signals. RG-59 / RG-6 (The RG stands for Radio Guide) is better than paired cable for this

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's not a "MIDI" connector. MIDI is often transmitted through those connectors, but they're actually called 5-pin DIN.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3rd one from the top one isn't usb, that'a mini display port -__-

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I disagree, mini displayport (it's all on word) is a bit shorter and wider, that looks like USB-B.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It looks like mDP/TB, the top goes down past the corners.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I still think it's not nearly wide enough, it's too square. mini displayport male for reference:

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True. It's a total mess either way.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Glad I wasn't the only one who caught this.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Many are incorrect. That is a USB-B port.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's actually either mDP or Thunderbolt 1 or 2, it's a real nifty trick that they're actually fully compatible.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*AHEM* ...Toslink.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Really? o_Ó Tip-Ring-Sleeve is VERY common on headsets.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck Bananas. They never even stay connected so you can't really call them a "Connector".

Damn now I feel old.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't. SCSI is still used in professional equipment and most servers.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

SCSI uses about a billion different connectors - it's not part of the standard. Some can be lumped into the 'D-Subminiature' category, though

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck your HDMI, Displayport/mDisplayport forever!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You know, because a nostalgia post should be updated, right.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I still have a VGA monitor as a second. And DVI as primary.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Monica

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, same. Well, DVI as primary, VGA secondary, HDMI for my third, which is just my TV but in case I wanna watch a stream or movie. :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But when I have room, I'm gonna set up a third monitor that is identical to my secondary.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Elaborate

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Supports higher resolution/framerate combos earlier (support for 4K @ 60 Hz still sucks in HDMI land for example)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you've got the right monitor you can daisy chain them so you only need to hook one to the computer. 2 screens for 1 port!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

DP has a relatively common and good mini connector and a better latching large connector.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

if u only have a 1080p monitor is displayport still bette rthan hdmi or it wont make a difference?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a superset of HDMI's capabilities? It is strictly better or equal.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

are u sure about that lol

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yep. Support for much higher resolutions and daisy chaining among others, and the protocol can be run over USB C.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seriously, DP 1.2 dates back to 2009, can handle adaptive sync and has more bandwidth than HDMI 2.0, released in 2013 & still rare.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it currently fries a lot of electronics

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It fries chargers only if you buy cheap usb cables that are out of spec. They try to draw too much power potentially damaging the charger.

I will absolutely never want to use USB-C as an audio connector.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Why

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Because you can't implement DRM to analog out. But you can do that with USB-C, which is the ONLY reason the industry is pushing it so much.

10 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 1

Because I don't want to give up the field-repairability of analog audio.

(Ex: I have to re-tail an XLR snake at some point because I've lost some channels, but a) I can, and b) I can work around it til I do)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh no, whatever will people do that use USB-C for audio do when their cable breaks?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have USB C. No one ever has a charge I can borrow :(

10 years ago | Likes 197 Dislikes 1

I used to have that problem owning a nexus 6p. Until I got all my mates to get the same phone ????????????

Find yourself a friend with a shiny new MacBook

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But would that end racism?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bought like 5 cables with my new phone for this reason

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Join the club bro. You have a charger at my house if you ever find yourself on the east coast.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I find myself there all the time, since I live in NJ.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well I'm a bit further south in VA, but we can see if it reaches that far.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I carry a tiny adapter in my wallet for exactly that reason. Best £1.50 I've spent!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My friend was using my phone and kept trying to shove a micro USB into my 6p. It's not the saaaaame

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You need new friends* :P

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have USB C, you can come to my place and charge up! ;)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a nexus 6p user, I know that feel

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Give it about 3 years for devices to roll over. Manufacturing still has to spin up.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Carry a micro to USB C adapter with you. They are cheap on Amazon. I got 2 for like $5 for my Nexus 5X

10 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

That... seems pointless, no? When putting USB B and C together, you're stuck at the limits of USB B.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but it's better than nothing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What I mean is that a USB B to USB B would work the same. You can put a USB B male in a USB C female, it'll work the same.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bought have a few USB A - C cables to use with old chargers I have around and to use in my car but that is a very portable solution!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got two from Techmatte, also on Amazon, works great.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's what I got and they don't work for me at all

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good idea. I have a 5x too :)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is what I have. They work great.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck it got 500 of them, one in backpack and the rest of them in my pocket

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Judas coming through again. Thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make sure Benson Leung approves, so this cable won't fry the battery

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ayyyyy 5X squad assemble

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Loving my 5X, can plug it in to charge in the dark while others suffer

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(cough cough) Lightning cable (cough cough). But seriously, USB-C just wins Android since its reversible AND it charges so ridiculously fast

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Assembleeeeeeeeeee

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Eyyy... I've never been able to charge faster :p

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Truuu, USB-C ftw. But I bought a USB-C to USB-A adapter and it charges sooo slowly. No joke, it said 3 hours to charge up from 20%.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OMG! I have that model of phone also.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

niceee

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
