At this point, just replace it. Some have a catch latch that if they get too hot, they will lock open and over cool the engine and your gas mileage will go to crap.

Gas mileage is good. This is on a triumph Sprint st955. I do have a replacement on order though just in case. Changing the oil before the test ride. Idling for 15 minutes was successful and the temp needle never rose past the halfway mark. Fan came on and also turned off so that's a good sign. I suspect I might have had an air bubble in the hoses and did the flush and refill more correctly this time. There is a bleed screw on the other side of the bike that I missed last time.

OK good. I wasn't sure what this went in. If it was a modern car it would adjust air fuel mixture to help warm up the engine to run tempature and the catalytic converter/O2 sensor.
I've missed a bleed screw before when replacing a lower manifold gasket on an 2001 Buick and screwed up the engine.

It's good to check it's function, to diagnose your problem. But don't reuse it, just get a new one

Replacement is on order. Had to make do with this one for now. Is it dead if it still works though?

If it opens, or is stuck open. Worse is the car takes long to warm up. Stuck closed, car will overheat, go without it then

It works fine so far. I tested it twice to see it open and close. I'm starting to think the water pump isn't working. The coolant is boiling over into the reservoir and not returning to the radiator. A replacement thermostat and new hoses are on the way.

Depending on the vehicle, water pumps can be easy or hard. But I have seen them with the blades in the pump almost gone, not pumping water at all
