Quick rebuild of an old table

We acquired, for free, an old metal patio coffee table years ago. It had seen better days. I had re-stained the wooden slats and gave the metal frame a spray coat of hammered silver paint. But by this year, the slats were rotting away. Meanwhile, my 19yo son, who plans to go into the carpentry apprenticeship program, wanted to build himself a wooden bedframe:

So, with the off cuts of the 1x3 slats (and cutting up a surplus 1x3), I replaced the rotten slats with nice new ones. They’re thicker than the old ones, so I used my vintage hand-me-down table saw to notch the ends to fit into the table frame. A couple spray coats of clearcoat and it looks almost new again!
