Explanation: The Ultramarines are considered one of the strongest and most honoured of all the Space Marine Chapters in the Imperium of Man, and were responsible for almost single-handedly holding the Imperium together after the Horus Heresy.
Highly-disciplined and courageous warriors, the Ultramarines have remained true to the teachings of Primarch Roboute Guilliman for 10,000 standard years. The Ultramarines were originally the XIIIth Space Marine Legion before the reforms that initiated the Second Founding and reshaped the Imperium after the Heresy in the Time of Rebirth on the orders of Guilliman himself as the lord commander of the Imperium and Imperial Regent.

Fun Fact: The gene-seed of the Ultramarines is highly regarded as one of the most stable, with only a ten percent chance of mutation. Ultramarines Gene-Seed perfectly utilizes every organ and implant with low risk of mutation or defect. Moreover there is little observed degeneration of Gene-Seed over time, making Ultramarines Gene-Seed as perfect today as it was in the time of the Horus Heresy. The Gene-seed is noted however for having a predisposed increase in aggression and a tendency towards cohesion and adaptation of hierarchy.

After seeing Titus body an armored car, watching that Ultramarine bat away a tyranid is kinda pitiful.

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

That uhh...that is also Demetrian Titus.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That makes it even MORE disappointing

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What if I told you shoulder-check of the tank was AFTER the one on the Tyranid. He was working up to it!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Getting pedantic, but Titus ran down the car at FULL sprint, which was also coming at him at Mach Tzeentch, and physics ensued. The tyranid and Titus weren't coming at each other as fast, he just kind of leaned into shoulder checking it hard. Probably still should have caved in its dirty xenos chest cavity but still

Idk...I just kinda assume a gaunt is simply tougher than a cultist mad max style shitbox.

Question: Why are the Ultramarines considered the strongest and most honoured when (If I've been told correctly) there's an entire chapter out there thats never once been corrupted? Grey Knights, I think?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Both drew their power from the same Arcane Ward.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ultras aren't the strongest chapter, they're the most universal chapter. Jack of all trades master of none, but still better than a master of one. Every other chapter is better than them at 'something', but you can trust that you can throw the Ultras into anything and they'll come out on top.

One word, Logistics

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The 1st Legion just lets the 13th Legion think they're the best. Easier to ignore Rowboat's teachings and get stuff done if you are being ignored.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's always been my head cannon for the Raven Guard and the White Scars.

"Yeah, cool book. But we're just gonna go do our own thing..."

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's basically canon at this point. It is well known that the "successor" chapters of the 1st are successor chapters in name only, the 1st still wields them like elements of their Legion.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shhh! It's a secret! ;)

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Grey Nights are not a standard SM chapter, iirc. They do not have a primarch, nor a homeworld like the others. They are direct creations from the Emperor's geneseed (kinda adjacent to the Custodes, if you want to be super reductive and not read 9 lore books) and explicitly tasked with fighting active incursions by actual chaos demons, not just their acolytes and cults. Average citizens are executed if they see the grey knights. They "do not exist".

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They do have the whole moon of Titan as their fortress monastery. But I guess it's not technically a home world. So you're technically correct. (The best kind of correct.) They don't recruit from the population. They get their recruits from the black ships that scour the galaxy looking for psychers that get fed to the Astronomican.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is more detail than I was aiming to specify, but yeah, basically. I mostly meant that when people talk about the 18* chapters, the Grey Knights are not one of those OG chapters. They're more like spec-ops than anything.

(*20 chapters, fuck the emperor, we stan the lost legions!)

The forgotten and the purged.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Smurfs aren't the strongest at all, they are a codex compliant 1000 marine force. The black templars outnumber them at least 5 to 1. The Space Wolves have as many marines as Fenris produces, whether or not that puts them over 1000, so frequently they have more and a stronger force overall.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Grey Knights are the strongest of the strong space marine but they SOLELY are for fighting deamons. Smurfs are the strongest cause they are the legion with the most or close to the most successor chapters and thanks to a writer were written to basically never fail ANYTHING they did no matter how fucking suicidal it was.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Ahh. So against Tyranids or Orks, Grey Knights would get stomped?

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Grey Knights are the psychic spartan 2s of the imperium. But with much cooler stuff.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not necessarily. The Ultramarines are painted like the poster boys/jack-of-all trades kind of Space Marines that can adapt well to just about any enemy. Grey Knights are specialists, but they're still hulking giants with awesome weaponry. They COULD handle orks and tyranids, they are just basically never sent to do that.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No. Grey knights are broken af. One of them is just... in the warp, picking fights. Forever. Cause he can. He's almost literally being Doomguy in the 40k universe. Jumped into the warp cause he was sick of their bullshit and reality incursions, so he took the fight to them. Sans Gellar field. You DO NOT enter the warp without a gellar field, unless you're Kaldor Draigo

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Being anti-demon specialist means they don't have anti-tank specialist, for example. You have to fight demons on physical and psychic level, which means melee works a lot better because is more personal and has more thought on the intent than pressing the trigger of a gun. So you always see them with a spear or sword and a embedded Bolter on a gauntlet, but never with a heavy Bolter.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not necessarily, depends on the enemy size and strength, but Grey Knight are not just another chapter. They are entirely unique within the SM. They are the military arm of the Ordo Malleus (Anti-Demon Inquisitor branch) and all of them are Psykers. They even have a unique armor that is "psyhco-conductive" and they do not follow the Codex Astartes either.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

GK are a huge secret & not really in line with the other Chapters. Better to think of them as... a halfway step between Astartes & Custodes.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was trying to remember the specifics of them, isn't the chapter such a secret among the Empire of Humanity that even witnessing them is a guaranteed execution?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was in older lore. It may have changed since the story has progressed and the great rift has opened.
But it's 40k. If you sneeze in the wrong direction, execution. Or they turn you into a servitor if they're feeling compassionate.

Ultramarines seem to be what most non-40K players think of when someone mentions Space Marines; similar to how the default image of Imperial Guardsmen are Cadian Shock Troopers. They are not, however, 'generic'. When the Emperor set out to collect the scattered Primarchs, he found most of them in positions of leadership - head of an order of knights, tribal leaders, leading a slave revolt, etc. It was usually a large group, or possibly an entire planet's worth of civilizations,

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Idk if generic is the right word but I'd definitely use "neutral". They don't have much of the uniqueness of other legions/chapters as they're so stable. Not a bad thing at all, I'm rather drawn to the efficacy of stability, strucutre, and logistical aptitude that wins wars, since that actually is more effective than constantly charging an enemy gunline for glorious melee combat.

The Ultramarines are easily the most "standardized" of the SM chapters, excepting maybe Alpha legion, but fuck alpha legion (they'll never guess that I'm Alpharius), for exactly the reasons you say. They ascend rank by following the codices, rather than the batshit stuff other legions get up to (looking at you, white scars) and by showing their consistency and reliability WITHIN the structure of Gulliman's empire, rather than in spite of it. Arguably boring af too, but das opinion, not fact.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right; they're pretty much the go to because they exemplify the common aspects of the Astartes. Transhuman, hulking power armor, militant monastic order along the lines of the historic Knights Templar or Teutonics. Like, I wouldn't expect someone not into the lore to know what the Canis Helix was, or know the history of the Black Rage, or why the Raven Guard wear different armor than most of the other loyalists. If you want a brief rundown of what a marine is, look no further than the Smurfs.

Guilliman, however? He found Guiliman ruling over a kingdom consisting of _five hundred planets_. Every Primarch had their own unique ability or feature; Guilliman's was logistics. He could organize the hell out of anything put in front of him. His thought processes were focused on a bigger picture than his brothers even knew existed. He, literally, wrote the book on the Astartes organization, command structure, and rules while the rest of the Legions were still wallowing in defeat or trying to

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

figure out what they were supposed to do now that both Big E and Malacador were out of the picture. Not everyone complied to the Codex (most notably the Space Wolves), and others found loopholes in it (The Black Templars being officially in a constant state of crusade, thereby putting themselves on an active combat footing which exempted them from any structual changes). As a side note, I loved how crossing the Rubicon basicaly Frankensteined Titus in SM2 - surgical scars on both shoulders,

neck, etc - like they took him apart and put him back together. Kind of explains why the surgery has such a high failure rate.

Rowboat Girlyman lol

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. He's like that Burnydick Cookiepatch guy; it doesn't matter how wrong you say it, people still know who he is.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is perhaps worth pointing out no one, not even the ultramarines themselves truly adhered to the codex astartes, even when Gulliman was around the first time after he wrote it. "No chapter should have more than 1000 marines" Gulliman said as he quietly kept the ultramarines chapter at roughly 3 and a half times that size. I love that he comes back 10k years later and immediately goes "no this was rubbish what was i thinking"

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

True enough; but as they man said 'it's more of a guideline than a rule'. Most at least pay lip service to it, or cherrypick parts they like out of it. If nothing else, it helps keep the game rules consistent.
