The Finnish 'Donut' That’s Giving the Battery World Indigestion

It's a proper bar fight, and I've got a front-row seat. Here is the claim that has everyone spitting out their coffee. A small startup from Helsinki, a place usually reserved for heavy metal bands and rallying drivers, claims to have beaten Toyota, Samsung, and the entire industrial might of China to the solid-state finish line.

The numbers they are throwing around are bonkers: Energy Density: 400 Wh/kg - that's nearly double what you get in a Tesla. Charging in five minutes - not enough time to scratch your nose, let alone drink a coffee. 100,000 cycles before it gives up the ghost - your current EV battery conks out after about 1,500 to 3,000 cycles. This thing would outlive you, your children, and possibly the concept of personal transport itself. Apparently, the new battery works happily from -22°F to 212°F, and it costs roughly the same as current batteries.

If that's true, it's not a breakthrough. It's a miracle. It's like discovering that Guinness is actually a health drink. But the experts have questions, and I don't blame them. Usually, when something sounds too good to be true, it is. But the keyword here is "usually."

Because the plot thickens when you look at where this wizardry is coming from. Donut Lab points toward work done by another Finnish outfit, Nordic Nano. Last October, Donut dropped a "significant strategic investment" in Nordic Nano, which specializes in nanotechnology for solar and battery applications. Nordic Nano then released a report claiming they developed a "bipolar electrostatic capacitor" with specs that look suspiciously like Donut's battery claims. Same 400 Wh/kg density, same immortal lifespan, same fireproof safety.

The CEO of Nordic Nano, Esa Parjanen, is playing his cards so close to his chest they're practically surgically attached. "We don't want to reveal where and how we make our products. It's a trade secret," he says. He claims they use "nanomass," a carbon-based composite material.

But there is a theory floating around, courtesy of EV expert Laycee Schmidtke from the MissGoElectric YouTube channel. She did some digging into Nordic Nano's Chief Scientist, Bela Bhuskute. Her research focuses on "titanium dioxide nanostructures" and "carbon nanotubes."

I wrote about the new Verge motorcycle due in the next few months, largely because it's powered by this magic battery and looks like something Tron would ride if he had a better budget. I had my reservations - as I always do when someone promises me the moon on a stick - but since I am mostly optimistic, I hope there's more to this story than just sugary marketing glaze.

Let's get one thing clear - capacitors are not batteries. A capacitor stores energy in an electrical field between plates. Essentially, it's a bucket you can dump electricity into instantly. A battery stores energy chemically - like a sponge you have to soak. Capacitors are great for short bursts (Lamborghini uses a tiny one in the Sian for a torque fill), but they usually take up massive amounts of space. To get battery-level range out of a capacitor, you'd need a car the size of a cathedral.

Yet, Nordic Nano says their team cracked it. The company claims to have a facility in Imatra, Finland, right near the Russian border. The local paper, Yle, reported that production has started at a "mysterious factory" where they've built new fencing to prevent "corporate espionage." It's all very James Bond. What's next? The factory is guarded by sharks with laser beams?

The theory? It might be an anode-free sodium-metal battery. Sodium - the stuff in table salt - is far more abundant than lithium. If they've managed to make a sodium battery that doesn't weigh as much as a small moon and charges in five minutes, they've solved one of the biggest headaches in the industry. But while sodium is cheap, the supply chain isn't exactly there yet compared to lithium.

This brings us to the Verge TS Pro. This isn't a concept vehicle drawn on a napkin; the company says the bikes are shipping to customers in the US and Europe this quarter. The bike claims 370 miles of range and charges to 80% in under 10 minutes. Did Donut and Verge figure out how to combine a capacitor with a battery? If unicorns were ever real, Finland seems like a place they'd call home.

If Donut Lab has indeed achieved a breakthrough, it could open a new chapter for the battery world and bring a lot of attention to Europe, which is currently terrified of the Chinese juggernaut. If not, it could join a long list of failed start-ups that promised bold things and failed to deliver.

The Chinese giants, for their part, are furious. Svolt Energy's CEO, Yang Hongxin, basically shouted, "That battery doesn't exist in the world!" His logic is simple: If China hasn't done it, nobody can. It's a bold stance, but considering China controls 80% of the battery market, you can see why he's miffed.

Forgive me for being dumb, but how are they charging it so fast? I believe the bottleneck with current ev batteries is electric grid infrastructure, not battery chemistry? I really hope this is real, energy dense batteries are going to change electrification for the better.

I believe it's a bit of both. You charge standard cells too fast and bad things happen.

I've seen so many technology hypes through the years that are fake that I don't believe it until I can buy or use it.

Unfortunately it's so real that they aren't showing it to anyone or letting anyone independently validate or verify these claims and it's something they've accomplished with a team of 7 people and a shoestring budget that somehow hasn't been done by teams of hundreds of thousands of people with billion dollar budgets. Also if it is anything at all it's not a battery it would be a supercapacitor and those aren't very useful for energy storage which is why nobody else is doing it already.

If I can just plug it in at home and it'll keep the charge maintained, I'd still be OK with that. An E-Cycle would rock.

There are plenty of actually working electric motorcycles, that's not what I'm downplaying here, it's the revolutionary battery technology they're claiming to have. For people who don't know much about EVs, this might just sound like any other EV battery development headline. But to let you in on why this matters, it'd be like if a doctor claimed to cure cancer with a team of only 7 people and less than one percent of the budget of all cancer research but you're not allowed to see or verify it.

And it's not a matter of just keep it plugged in and it'll still get you around, I mean they're not useful for energy storage at all, which is why they're capacitors. Trust me man there's no carmaker out there on earth right now that wouldn't be using supercapacitors instead of batteries if you actually really could get a higher watt-hours per kilogram out of them than you could lithium. They have no reason not to want to sell a better product.
