Guns don't kill people. People do, with guns sometimes with guns

So there has been a number of pro and anti gun posts recently and a number of posts stating you can't blame guns for mass shootings. Sometimes those posts on both sides are just retarded and sometimes they have compelling arguments or their respective sides but not blaming guns?

So I live in Great Britain and we have extremely tight gun laws and regulations. It is possible to own certain types of guns but it's not easy.
There are illegal guns here but the number is very low in comparison even when broken down to guns per head.
We had a mass shooting of a primary school in dunblane back in 1996

I was 16 at the time and remember it well. So when the Sandy Hook massacre happened I instantly thought of dunblane.

I post this because I see on the news, in the papers and on social media plus all the posts on here about mass shootings, police shootings and all the other shootings that occur in the U.S. and in a number of these shootings, the mass shootings at least, the weapons often used are guns like the AR-15 or they are powerful shotguns. I know hand guns are used too. I'm not saying they aren't but we hear about the shootings like Sandyhook and there are many times the shooter has had access to legally bought weapons like the bushmaster Adam Lanza used. Now in his case he didn't own the weapons his mother did. He had access to these guns and in a country like the UK he would not have.

A lot of people say it's not gun control that needs to be sorted it's mental illness but why does it have to be one or the other? Surely it makes sense to combat multiple issues on multiple levels.

I don't want people to think I am totally against guns. I would love to try out a few guns at range and have some fun but I haven't yet. I love the look of the Python and it looks so cool to fire. Plus I really can see for that most gun owners are responsible and careful. I can see for a lot people it is a hobby or collection that they cherish and love but when you have something that is as potentially dangerous as all guns are there is unfortunately arseholes out there that spoil it for everyone else.

I wish it wasn't this way. I wish people could enjoy guns as they want to as passionate past time and if I could hunt here like you can in America I would because as I said I have nothing against guns. Some of the guns I see on here are beautiful. Some are just plain baddass.

But what I don't understand is the pigheaded views of 'Don't blame guns, they don't shoot people, people do'

Whilst they are technically correct, a gun is designed for one main purpose. To shoot. You can say they are just objects but that doesn't mean they are any less dangerous. A toaster (teamtoaster) is an object that can be used to kill but it's not designed to shoot. It's designed to toast. You can't genuinely compare a gun with any other house hold object and say it's not more dangerous because if it isn't it's not a very good gun. It's failing in it's task. A gun has its main goal and that goal is death. No one can truly deny that. If you do you are truly kidding yourself.

I often hear as well the argument that a gun is for protection and they feel safer with one and I also hear the argument that people are more likely to die from their own gun than someone else's and to honest I don't have enough first hand experience to truly understand why you want or feel the need to have that sense of protection but I do not live in a country with guns so easily available. I do however think that a lot of the time these excuses for wanting to have guns still.

I don't understand why so many people come up with often flimsy excuses and reasons. Why not just say 'I like guns. Please don't take away my right to own a gun, I like collecting them' instead. I know I would respect them more.

I know the U.S. will never truly ban guns, guns are part of Americas history. From the Wild West days to the classic American movies like Dirty Harry but there has to be a part of people that understands that may be your average home owner doesn't need an assault rifles. The clue is in the name. Assault rifle. It's for military assaults. Now I am sure some will say they are not assault rifles and to be fair I don't know all about them and I'm not claiming I do.

So I ask you imgur. What do you think? What do you think and what do you suggest?
