I don't get the hype, they announced Cataclysm Classic which was my least favorite expansion, no thank you.

I think more of the hype is retail final going a better way and the new stuff for the default classic. Personally I've seen nobody even talk about the Cata announcement till you mentioned it funny enough.

I guess the real question would be is Nostalgia even be worth it? Having done the first phase of classic and TBC, people get way to try hard for decade old content, and that's coming from someone who used to do mythic level raiding. Knowing how proc heavy things like ToT trinkets were and the legendary cape, it makes me wonder. However, I would wanna try out Monk in its original form since I was a Mistweaver main.

There is a place to have the option to experience this older content but I do agree that people take it was too seriously. It would be one thing if it was just their own lil guilds but it floods everywhere else. So you are left with no choice but to jump in if you want the gear, experience or mounts for your own fun. Hell improvements to it really do not hurt things either because you can never truly go back.
