I shared some pictures a week ago and mentioned our two does were due to kindle soon. We bred the girls a day apart. Since a rabbits gestation period is typically about 31 days, we provided nest boxes on day 28 and 27. Karsi immediately got to work making this awesome nest.

This is what Osha did..

Early morning on Karsi's due date, my husband came home from work to this. Rabbits will pull out their own fur to keep their kits warm.

We brought the box inside to check/count since it was cold outside. Of course we had a huge storm the night before. The first time mom had seven healthy babies. There's only six pictured because my husband was checking the other over.

Osha's original nest box broke and I apparently misplaced the staple gun, so I changed it out with this one in a hurry the night before she was due. She still did not bother getting it ready. This morning, she finally went to work and pulled a ton of hair. I spent quite a bit of time with the rabbits this morning, and finally took all their water bottles inside to refill with fresh water. I then picked some dandelion leaves, and by the time I made it back (which was roughly ten minutes) this girl was cleaning babies!

Eleven, in fact. Three are a bit on the smaller side, so we'll keep a close eye on them over the next day or two and decide if we need to foster a couple to Karsi. So far all is well and I'm just really hoping it stays that way! I'm so proud of the little mamas.

Omg i love rabbits!!

I see that y'all harvested the discarded egg shells for next Easter already. Way to plan ahead!

The way rabbits go, you'll be able to repost this every few weeks and have it be OC.

Please don't keep rabbits on wire floors, I know it's common in the US

9 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 9

Keep us posted on their progress. Congrats to the buns and bitties

Why are some black and some pink

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The dark ones will have dark fur and the pinks will have lighter colored fur.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I feel that Osha's nest would not be OSHA approved

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

@OP cute baby buns I'm squeeing so hard and making unmanly noises and I think my brovaries exploded.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 7

My husband could barely talk himself into going to sleep afterwards. It's hard not to be excited over teeny tiny baby rabbits, I think.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh man, in that next to last pic I thought it said "this girl was chewing babies!"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I watched her closely as that does sometimes happen. Usually by overcleaning.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are you breeding said rabbits for meat?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. :x

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The ones you raise from the start taste the best in the end.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

They look delicious.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

While I trust you take good care of them because they look so healthy, please cover that floor. That wire hurts to walk on for them.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Wire floors aren't so bad if they're the proper size and they have a place to get off of it when they need to. They're also not in these all

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

day and will soon be in them even less.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Thanks for explaining! From a professional point of view I don't FULLY agree but I like that you're changing it and offering them choices.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I appreciate your civility!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just be careful. Rabbit may feel endangered and even eat buns.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Keep us updated, OP! I can't wait to see the wriggly jelly beans get their floof

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Umm...they look like uncooked gyoza!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They look like hubba bubba watermelon

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

legit thought it said the buns were killed

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OSHA approved:

Old School Hardhat Accident.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cross-fostering. Definitely an interesting concept.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op what's your plan for all these bunnies?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hassenpfeffer ?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I really should have expected this question to come up. Um, well, dinner, broth, pelts, dog treats. We plan to use every part one way or

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

another as to not waste anything.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dinner.

Do rabbits sometimes eat their kids??Cause I know hamsters does

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sometimes. It's more often that they'll accidentally take off some toes or part of the ear while cleaning, but they will also sometimes

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

eat a kit that is failing to thrive. I've heard of mothers eating whole litters too, though. In that case, usually the doe will be culled.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn mother nature is scary as fuck

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oshas like "Bitch I'm carrying 11 babies I dont have the time or energy required to build the goddamned Monticello over here."

9 years ago | Likes 866 Dislikes 0

Can you imagine shiting out out 11 kids at once? I probably wouldn't mind if 9 of them died.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

Rabbits have such large litters because all of them don't usually make it. Happy now?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm laughing pretty hard at this. Same voice as the other guy in my head.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Crazy thing is we were pretty sure Osha was probably pregnant, but absolutely certain about Karsi. I really thought Osha was would have a

9 years ago | Likes 160 Dislikes 0

smaller litter of about 5-6.

9 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

Legit laughed at "goddamned Monticello."

9 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

Same. I rarely if ever laugh out loud at comments.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same! Thx for the chuckle, @mcshady

Her build is more Palladio than i could ever manage.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I live on the goddamned Monticello

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wide loop metal net floors!! Really!?!? Not ideal for floofs. Only thought industry and people too lazy to clean cages used these still.

9 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 18

It's half inch wiring and seems to be preferred by rabbits in hot weather due to more ventilation. They have wood to rest on for both

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

comfort and avoiding hocks. On warmer days, they're also given frozen tiles to lay on if they choose. All three generally prefer the wire.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

They all also get daily time in a tractor to forage and once we improve the fencing to the run, they will get even more time to roam freely.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

yeah i was thinking that is a shitty way to live as a bun. i see them do that with pet mill dogs. :( let them have some lawn.

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 6

They get time in a portable tractor and will have more access to roam freely once we improve the fencing.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

well we don't know, maybe thats just the cage they're in when they're suppose to have some babies in the upcoming days.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

my vet friend just told me the opposite, you are advised to have a double layer of cardboard on the bottom of the pen.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

haha well, your vet friends facts does not change the situation at hand. I KNOW what you are suppose to do, I had rabbits for 15 years.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 17

just because you did it for 15 years doesn't make it right, puppy farms practice what they do and think its okay. its just cheaper. relax.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

TIL kindle is a word for.... tiny baby bunny birthing?

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Nesting I think

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. Kindle is bunny birthing. Kit is the term for baby bunnies.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Please keep us updated!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Osha is my spirit animal.

9 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 2

My spirit animal doesn't have to give birth eleven times in a row

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

TIL that rabbits procrastinate too

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Helpful tip: cover the wire floor. Bunnies don't have padding on their feet, and the bare wire hurts them.

9 years ago | Likes 271 Dislikes 7

Plus, tiny rabbit feet are tempting to predators underneath the hutch.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

This certainly is a legitimate concern. So far we've seen no predators on or around our land, but obviously we aren't counting on that long

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

term. We're working on improving the barn they are currently in, as well as the fencing to their run.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yes! if the concern is the poop. they will find a corner to poop on. My bun is pretty much potty trained. Only poops in one corner.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

sometimes covering the wire is a bad thing, and can trap rabbit waste, which will grow bacteria and make rabbits sick, or give them sores.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Helpful tip: buns don't belong in hutches. They do much better inside or in a run if outside.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 4

And then they get eaten. Or slaughtered by a lawnmower. Or run over. Try a much larger hutch.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 11

Do you know what a run is? Honest question. I could have it wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

My rabbit is a house rabbit, but he has a hutch outside for when he wants to be outside.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not all rabbits can live happily inside. House rabbits need to be trained since they are very young.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've worked with lots of rabbits rescued from years of outdoor living. A rabbit of any age can adjust to indoors with patient training/love.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

@op

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Those hutches clearly have wooden areas the buns can rest on. I built a huge bun mansion that had 70% wooden surfaces, they CHOSE to 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

2/2 poop on the grated area. Yeah, ALL wire mesh is a poor set-up, but saying you shouldn't ever use it is silly. They clearly don't mind.

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Rabbits choose a place to poop out of habit, not based on flooring. Very simple to put a litter box there. Wire causes broken toes and 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

sore hocks, which lead to infections, among other problems. There is no need for wire under their feet.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wire flooring is cleaner for them and helps with ventilation. We provided wooden areas for them to rest/get off the wire. They also

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 9

get plenty of time in a portable tractor so they can forage the yard.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 5

I'm glad you kind of stood your ground about the wire stuff -- for SOME breeds it's more a concern, but having a wooden platform is fine

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

We talked with our vet, neighbors, and a few breeders before getting into rabbits. Wire seemed to be the way to go. Before getting into

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

livestock, I would have felt the exact same as the people commenting against wire.

..if you're worried about the poop etc then you shouldn't be owning rabbits anyway, they should be spotted cleaned daily

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 8

Poop isn't my concern. I collect that for the garden.

Our vet deals with both small and large livestock, and recommends a wire cage.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

Then you need a new vet, your bunnies are suffering with that as a floor and their babies will too

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 14

I'm curious if you have experience with meat breeds or 4H?
