My most controversial opinion is that all the fear mongering around pedophiles is essentially useless and any politician, news org, YouTube talking head, etc that rallies around protecting children or Epstein is not worthy of your time. Things like the Panama Papers show exponentially more societal harm and represent a far greater existential threat than any pedo or group of pedos ever could. Also things like sex ed can probably save more kids from pedos than any law or punishment ever could.

Fallout yes, but that fallout is very small change in the grand context of the whole story. Real consequences would be effective changes to the legal frameworks on a global level, because most of what happened was and still is technically legal, if highly immoral.

Agreed, not nothing, and I have been following changes in several countries. Still, to not just shift responsibilities around, a broader attempt with international agreements would be necessary. The way this is confronted is mostly just replacing loopholes with other loopholes.

a. From a UK perspective: 1. An awful lot of what went on is morally reprehensible, but not illegal. This means settlements are done on a civil basis with no news. 2. Penalties are rarely charged because there is ALWAYS advice from accountants and lawyers saying it was all legitimate. 3. Investigations take YEARS. The Panama Papers didn't add much to what we already knew. 4. High-end tax investigation is a very niche area and we don't have the resource to investigate everything.

b. The investigators in my unit aren't not investigating stuff because they don't want to. It's just not possible. 5. This stuff requires international cooperation. Obviously the tax havens don't want to share information. The US is a massive stumbling block here too. Despite this, FATCA and the EU's Common Reporting Standard make hiding money abroad harder and riskier. The time limits for investigating and raising assessments have also increased.

I don't need weekly updates, but maybe just like, "this agency is in charge of investigating" or a "here's what we know" every couple months would be a nice way to tell people that SOMETHING is happening, as opposed to what usually happens when rich people do big crimes which is》

Panama papers changed a lot in civilized countries. In the US it was found that our laws are so loose for the wealthy that what they had done wasn't legally actionable (or so barely illegal that it wasn't worth prosecuting). So it's not that nothing happened, just that nothing happened in the USA (which is the same as "nothing happened" to a a lot of US-centric people. I don't know the demographics of Imgur, but the US seems to have a larger voice here)
