Christ on a cracker, people... Trading is most def a successful way of getting dogs to drop something. I've got foster dogs #'s 271 and 272 currently and have done a lot of working with trainers to get these huskies adoption ready. This is a tried and true tactic.
Yep, that was a bad choice. Best option is to hold the bread as still as possible and wait for them to give up, and teach them "release". Don't say anything else.

My dog's super secret release button is to just grab her ear. She will literally let go of anything she's holding if you grab her ear.
