They have no trouble hating both the estate tax and giving to the poor -- contradictory positions if it's true that giving money to people is bad for recipients. If so, it's even worse to leave children large inheritances. If it's not bad for children to get a large inheritance, then it's also not bad to give the poor enough money to survive.

That's literally what inheritance tax is lol.

Rich people need the poor to stay poor, so they can have more money.
RiverHawk
The problem lies in who pays giving money to the poor. These people just hate taxes, hate equal chances and hate a government that strives
RiverHawk
for an equal playing field for all. And especially any kind of income redistribution.

NerdyNerdTubaNerd
The founders instituted the estate tax so we wouldn't end up with an aristocracy and landed gentry.
NerdyNerdTubaNerd
It mostly works. Take the Vanderbilts. 100 years ago they were the richest. Today they're upper crust, but workers - Anderson Cooper FTW.

CuddlyPervert
The Estate tax is just admitting we didn't tax them enough in life. >.> Tax em while they still live!
gytgud
Its about class. They r allowed. U r not.
cbale2000
You get what you subsidize. When you subsidize "being poor" (and not "getting out of poverty") you get more poor people. Also, there's...
cbale2000
... a belief among conservatives that, fundamentally, you have the right to the money you earn, and that government should only take from...
cbale2000
... you only the absolute minimum necessary to run necessary government functions; wealth redistribution not being included in "necessary".
Bobbybigbutt
I don't want your stimulus check. I'd rather take over daddy's company.

Unless you are John Paul Getty and then no one gets shit.
YouEatYellowSnow
They killed the estate tax. Which was an agreement to bring in new tax cuts to help build their businesses and pay it back later.
YouEatYellowSnow
But in 2017 they killed it and did not reverse the tax cuts which were the trade off.

I mean scoff at it but it's way less than what he could have and passing on morals and ideals +10mil is way more important

iirc he said the kids ar only hetting 10 mil each the rest goes to charity.
pickinganameistoomuchpressure
even the morals go to charity?

How will they survive?
ImBoredouttamyskull
Through sheer grit, determination, and living off the interest income that measly 10 mil generates. Dammit, that's gonna be rough.

The name alone will carry them through life opening any door. They don’t even need money.

The inheritance is given after a life long bond of kinship and learning, with the hopes that the children use that knowledge to be successfu
hardytardigrade
So you are saying we should spend a ton more on public education, so everyone can have more "kinship and learning"?
Skrumblecakes
Do you really think Donald Trump is teaching Eric anything or expects him to be good at anything?
BenjyX55
To be fair, the post is about billionaires.

Ha. Fair point.

Right, that's why they have to bribe schools to get their lazy little brats in.
0000013
Estate tax hits after inheritance is above 13 million USD. Less ”kinship and learning” and more ”ultrarich fuckers”
housefriedricenoshrimp
Giving willingly is one thing but having the government confiscate it from you to redistribute is wrong.
GrandProtectorDark
It absolutely is not wrong whatsoever. It's the only way we can make a fair society work
hardytardigrade
You are arguing against the basic concept behind taxation. A society based on "everyone do what they want, willingly" would be a disaster.
Grimdude
Lol yeah let's just ask the rich to distribute their wealth in a helpful way. I'm sure they'll get right on that.
DanaConti5
If you don’t believe in taxation, you’re going to have a difficult time finding somewhere satisfactory to build a life.

Taxation is what you described.

I’ll get some heat for this but: If people spent as much time working and making good financial decisions as they do bitching about rich >
dm80x86
Someone hasn't heard of "The Kobayashi Maru".
0000013
Youre not ”catching heat” you are ”making a dumb strawman argument in bad faith”
hardytardigrade
Let's see the stats you are working from. What's the average amount of time an adult of working age spends bitching about the rich? Source?
DanaConti5
People don’t spend 40 hours a week bitching about the rich unless maybe they work for the Jacobin, tho.
BigTex1
I mean, have you ever seen Twitter?
0000013
Ah, Yes ”not having cancer” or ”being born into a rich, Well-connected family” being personal choices as Well as the #1 ”be born white”
BigTex1
Ah, yes “all of my problems are someone else fault” better bitch about people I don’t even know rather than tend to my own affairs.
GrandProtectorDark

1. Get a better job. Do your skills, responsibilities, etc. as an employee warrant higher pay?
GrandProtectorDark
Get a better job, with what time, what energy, what money
hardytardigrade
A solution that doesn't work for everyone in society at once isn't a societal solution. Everyone can't just "get a better job" at once.
DarkZalgo
So just stop being poor? Great advice.
SPENCEPUTER
Hey man you deserve all the heat you get for this. Maybe, MAYBE, could you take this as a sign to reinvestigate this belief?
BigTex1
Hey, the truth is no one is going take care of you except you. Can you dig yourself out of the hole or will you just sit there?
SPENCEPUTER
Do you actually believe this? I'm sorry you live a life devoid of people who care about you, and help each other. It sounds awful and scary.
SPENCEPUTER
Because when you actually look at people in general, we are generous and caring and kind. If you never come across someone willing to help..

ConfederacyOfDunces
He didn't say "all of." You are intentionally misconstruing his comment. You are arguing in bad faith.
0000013
Bitch Please, are you saying getting all three of those ”personal financial choices” roght from the get-go isnt an instant winning streak?
BigTex1
My point was worry about yourself and you’ll be in a much better position you kumquat.
BigTex1
< people, they’d be in a much better financial position. I don’t exactly make bank every year but I live comfortably due to being frugal.
SnowpersonHitInTheFaceWithALackOfCreativity
Now try that in Mozambique. You just don't get it
SoDark
that's the very definition of "i got mine, fuck you" no matter how frugal you are, you will end up in debt hell if you get seriously sick
hardytardigrade
So you have to live frugally to be comfortable, and that means if anyone else isn't comfortable it's because they don't work hard enough? No
DarthBorks
Why do the poor make poor financial choices, when all they have to do is make better financial ones? tHe sOLuTioN iS sO oBVioUs.
BigTex1
If you have been in and understand the debt cycle you’d realize that’s actually like 1/2 the issue.
ReturnOfHeebies
Exactly kiddo. Knowledge is part of the privilege. You just weren't privilege to right knowledge.
BigTex1
Well champ, it’s called self-education. Public library, internet, etc. knowledge has never been more accessible.
ReturnOfHeebies
And now you'll dismiss contrary information because it makes you feel bad
catnipHip
Tbh this makes me appreciate Bill Gates more, he will basically give nothing to his children and he's been using his money to help people.
joyouspopsical
He’s really not https://youtu.be/KtW4reb6zXQ
Evilpercy
No, he is is giving them the best education, his name, his connection and about 10 mil. But not billions.
usfanon
Bill Gates has more money now than he did when he promised to give it all away. He could single handedly end hunger and... He doesn't.
fbutt09
Whilst it’s a great move, even if he gives away close to a billion - as a percentage income, it’s not as generous as the average man donatin
fbutt09
Also he’s now purchasing multi millions in farmland in the US. So he’s diversifying his income. I guess we can learn from his generosity
dm80x86
IIRC the plan was to give most all of it away.
DaveTheScientist
He's already given away around $40 billion, and will be donating 99% of his fortune over his life. It's already committed.
aFloatingCabbage
I think they’ll each get like 1 million ish.. and he’s donating the rest.
Melkord90
$10 million, but yes their plan is to donate the rest.
aFloatingCabbage
Ty!!
Shakinbake
pumper
TIL $10 million is basically nothing.
buttdestroyer
Well compared to his net worth, yes, but still invest that and you can live the rest of your life comfortably without doing shit with it.
catnipHip
My bad, I remember him saying he would give them nothing, not 10 M. That's a lot, although Trump would say it's nothing.
upthehillandtotheright
Well compared to what he has yes. But i thought it was 1 or 2 mil each?
Yepthosearebees
Pocket change, really.
eckostylez
TIL $10 million cash and never having to work a day in your life is "basically nothing". Bill Gates is scum, he's no Chuck Feeney.
FloatingOnACloudOfTitties
What a loser just collecting downvotes! ???
BrokeMyFunnyBone
Why wouldn't they have to work a day in their lives..?? They don't have the 10 mil yet, and even with 10 mil, you'd still want to work.
SuperIncoherentRantingMan
Nah, echostylez seems to be one of those people that as soon as they have money, they'll stop being productive in any way to society.
eckostylez
Rory Gates has doubled that 10 mil without working once. This is like thinking Ivanka Trump truly "worked" this past decade LOL!
SuperIncoherentRantingMan
Perhaps you should think of it relative to his wealth, which wld be 0.00813% of his total wealth. Which would be almost nothing, relatively.
eckostylez
That's a silly way of looking at things of monetary value. It's a minimalistic view which doesn't really prove much.
FloatingOnACloudOfTitties
What a loser just collecting downvotes! ???
SuperIncoherentRantingMan
How is it minimalistic? Is the comment not about Bill Gates? Otherwise you'll just be comparing any two things in existence. So then using
eckostylez
Wealth is not relative, it's absolute. Suggesting otherwise is disingenuous. It's literally what Trump has done for decades.
SuperIncoherentRantingMan
Your "expanded world view" I could say $10 is a fortune to a man with $0, or Bill Gates is poor compared to the USA. You need to focus a bit
Armored0Titan0
Cool, doesn’t change the fact that he was a total bastard in the process of getting that money. There is no ethical way to make a billion.
Aloofgoof
theoneBernie
There is no ethical way for a great many things. And I'm not saying the ends justify the means but I'm saying even the best men in history

What? How did people think the phase 3 clinical trials were going to get funded? Of course they sold it to pharma. They had to.
