I'm developing a new narrative platformer, where you jump on dialogues to continue your story

Hi Imgur! I've started developing this "narrative platformer" game some time ago, where you choose how the story continues by jumping on dialogue boxes.

The idea is to have both story and gameplay mechanics all connected and dependant on each other.

For example, you can see in the above video how the "I'm the best" choice is harder to reach for the player (you).

The art style is still a mix between "placeholders" and "final images", but the overall mood (narrator included) is already here

I'm frequently showing around how the development progresses and I'd love to know what you think!
To never miss any post about the game (eg. release date):

The movement mechanics reminds me of the Knytt series.

this looks so cool!

I haven't had the desire to play a game in ages but I would totally play yours! :)

This is brilliant, I can use this in my classroom to teach narrative lines!

Some of the folks who upvoted this ad, did so while running an adblocker. What a time to be alive.

This reminds me of Thomas was alone. Also a great story based platformer. I look forward to how this turns out.

I looked for this comment because same. I was like "oh, that looks a little like Thomas Was Alone, which I enjoyed very much.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ty!! Ohh I know that game (and I really like it from what I saw) but I didn't have the chance to play it yet. Gonna do it soon!!

That's actually a good concept. Throw some secret story meta self-desribing story in there and you got an instant classic. Maybe mods, too?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

CONSTRUCTIVE: Be careful on who is speaking in the text. Is it a narrator or you, the developer. It may just end up a 'clever' concept 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and not a meaningful story with a plot or moral. Please make it more than a standalone exploratory piece like Stanley. The parable.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is unique and interesting.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's a great way to explore a narrative. Although you might run into book lovers hating game mechanics and gamers hating book reading. x_x

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a narrative platform game that's LITERALLY a narrative platform...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That sounds tedious, like a novel with extra steps.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I once played something like this that went through Edgar Allen Poe. The platforming distracted me just enough that I enjoyed the story more

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Whereas I usually don't have the attention span for 19th century poetry

And I thought I was the only one.

ive seen alot of things. This is the best shit ive seen in a while. Are you considering making an educational program for reading?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You go in friend. Keep us in updated let us know if it comes out for sale. Always looking to support Indy devs

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Reminds me of the Pick a Path books, but with more control over each step! Would be great to pull along reluctant readers.

This is exactly the kind of game and old grognard like me needs to stay fresh.

What language you use @op? Amazing work

Omg I love this

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Do you have a game title yet?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not yet, I am deciding between the last few candidates from these months ^^

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool idea! Are you going to have a way to preserve the stories one makes? You could monetize it by printing the stories as physical books

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Your website asks me to susbibe instead of suscribe.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

ahahahha wow thank you for letting me know! I fixed it right away ^^ (gonna add a subsibe easter egg somewhere)

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Was it susbibe or subsbibe? Ya both keep typoing.:---D

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make it harder. Throw in a haiku bonus level. Do a rap section where the beat/rhythm is important. This is so cool

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can choose which path you take, so you are jumping to conclusions.

Think you just created the name of the game!

6 years ago | Likes 219 Dislikes 0

I just assumed it was a Phantom Tollbooth reference

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

@OP If you didn't already have a name for it...Here it is.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

that's a bit of a premature conclusion, no?

Pole vault to conclusions.

Apple AppStore: "Yeah, we can't let it in here if it's not localized." Google Play: "We need at least 8 localizations."

That's my plan! But I highly recommend joining the newsletter, social media are waaay unstable D:

Subscribed!! Game developers are magicians to me. Idk how you do what you do but it's awesome and I'm glad you do it

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

reminds me quite strongly of Silent Conversation from way back on armorgames, in the days of Flash games. I liked playing that.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I was looking to see if anyone had posted about that game, I'd forgotten what it was called

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

also getting rather a pronounced Thomas Was Alone kind of vibe, which I also enjoyed very much.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's practically the same as Beyond The Page for Stadia: https://youtu.be/C-s0JonvPMY?t=71

It has the story selection as well and adds a full story behind it as an arcade where there are more choices

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Very unique. Really excited to follow the development.

Predictive text...the game.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dialogue jumping comes naturally to me, say I'm here commenting on a cool game & yadda yadda yadda I jump to the bit where I banged OP's mom

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not so unique. It's very similar to Beyond The Page for Stadia: https://youtu.be/C-s0JonvPMY?t=71 , which is great btw

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Much better trailer: https://youtu.be/QcX96Q6ZIu4. It has more than just picking words.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you, I really appreciate it!

6 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 2

Will the text be narrated? I imagine it'd be a lot of work, but it would make it a lot more fluid and could be a place to add character(s).

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aww that would be nice for sure! It all depends on the budget & possible funds, but in case I'll let you know via emails etc!

I mean, I'd rather see this than yet another Wendy's/KFC/Etc twitter ad

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

God forbid a proud solo dev with a cool idea share or even advertise their game, the nerve

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

I'm tired of this third-phase advertising shit on here. And Imgur is complicit.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Yikes. Is the bother of spending 5 max seconds to click 'next' so strong that you feel it justifies belittling someones work/hobby/passion?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

Yes, obviously, and commenting in this string. I also report each post for spam.
